Last year's fully rebuilt version of Age of Mythology from Microsoft already received the new Immortal Pillars expansion a few months ago. Already, a second expansion dubbed Heavenly Spear is now out the door, this time introducing a campaign featuring a Japanese pantheon of gods. Alongside it, a major update to base game owners containing a new game mode, fresh cheat codes, and more is here too.

The Heavenly Spear expansion's new campaign introduces Yasuko as the protagonist for a 12-mission storyline.

"As war looms and chaos spreads across the land, Yasuko is thrust into a world of gods, monsters, and mortal ambition," says the developer describing the setting. "With the guidance of Akari, guardian of the spear, Yasuko must uncover the relic’s secrets and prevent it from falling into the hands of Kagemasa, a ruthless warlord who seeks to imprison the sun goddess Amaterasu and claim godhood for himself."

Alongside new god powers, the new Japanese pantheon of gods brings with them new human and mythical creatures, with everything from ninjas to Shinigami available for players. The DLC also touts six multiplayer and skirmish maps set in Japanese landscapes.

Age of Mythology: Retold – Heavenly Spear expansion is now available for $19.99 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

As for the free update, the biggest feature addition is the Gauntlet. Currently available in beta form, this is a brand-new game mode that is playable both solo and in co-op, letting players run through a labyrinth of missions they can choose themselves. The roguelike experience gives players only three changes to go through the entire challenge before having to start over. Both temporary and permanent perks can be unlocked to make runs easier as well.

Its randomized nature means each run will offer new challenges and rewards when playing, with multiple difficulty levels to choose from. The harder the run, the more XP and unlocks players receive for surviving.

The update also includes major matchmaking improvements, a new AI personality to choose, new cheat codes to use from the chat, better modding tools, and a huge number of bug fixes and tweaks.
