It's one of the new build's smaller changes—but also one of the most annoying.

Now that Windows 11's first major post-release update has been issued, Microsoft has started testing a huge collection of new features, UI changes, and redesigned apps in the latest Windows Insider preview for Dev channel users. By and large, the changes are significant and useful—there's an overhauled Task Manager, folders for pinned apps in the Start menu, the renewed ability to drag items into the Taskbar (as you could in Windows 10), improvements to the Do Not Disturb and Focus modes, new touchscreen gestures, and a long list of other fixes and enhancements.

But tucked away toward the bottom of the changelog is one unwelcome addition: like the Home edition of Windows 11, the Pro version will now require an Internet connection and a Microsoft account during setup. In the current version of Windows 11, you could still create a local user account during setup by not connecting your PC to the Internet—something that also worked in the Home version of Windows 10 but was removed in 11. That workaround will no longer be available in either edition going forward, barring a change in Microsoft's plans.

While most devices do require a sign-in to fully enable app stores, cloud storage, and cross-device sharing and syncing, Windows 11 will soon stand alone as the only major consumer OS that requires account sign-in to enable even basic functionality. Apple's Macs still allow for local account creation during setup, and you can skip signing in when you set up iPhones and iPads (an Internet connection is sometimes required for device activation, though). Android likewise needs an Internet account for activation but doesn't require signing in to get you to the home screen. Even Chrome OS has a guest mode that you can use to enable basic browsing without a user account.

This change shouldn't affect anyone who has already configured Windows with a local account, nor will it affect people who use a workplace-provided username and password to log in to their work PCs. But it's a frustrating change for people who regularly set up new Windows installations for development or testing or anyone trying to set up a new PC in a place without an Internet connection. There are some hacky workarounds available, usually involving connecting to and then disconnecting from the Internet during setup, but my experience with these has been hit or miss. For those who want to use a local account, the best solution is to create a burner Microsoft account for use during setup and then to either create a new local user account or sign out of your Microsoft account once the OS is up and running.

We don't know when the Microsoft account requirement for Windows 11 Pro or any of the other changes in this build will be released to the general public. The company has said that it intends to make "continuous" changes to the operating system but also that some features tested in the Dev Insider channel might never see a public release.

And MICRO**** believe this is a good idea ??..
Well i guess this will just make people stick with windows 10 or earlier..
So assuming you need access to your internet account to login to your OWN computer just to be able to say play an offline game.. because low and behold.. you decided to go INTERNET FREE for a few months say due to every increasing bills and your internet is one of them.. so you decide as your at the end of your contract you decide to cancel it, therefore your now able to put that money to say other living expenses.. like FOOD..   Your computer which came with the OS is now telling you, you cant access your data, your games, your music,  that you could cause you now need the internet to LOGIN..

WOW how DUMB are they at microsoft.. Hope when they release this new improved version.. right at the top it says "the OS the requires the internet so you can actually use it."

I think i'll stick with windows 7.. and if they have a built in deactivation for it.. as in This OS will expire in ****.. and you will no longer be able to use it..

People will 1 find a way to get around it.. 2. no longer support Micro****, 3 stop using computers,
YOU DO KNOW WHATS COMING DONT YOU.. everyone whos got windows 11 installed at the moment when they get they "update tuesday" will end up with this "NEW FEATURE" before it gets rolled down to the windows 10 users.. with micosoft telling them its to improve THEIR safety..

AFAICS, the Microsoft account is only needed during the setup/install of Windows 11. You'll still be able to choose to instead use a local account for day-to-day use.

But I bet it'll become even harder to choose to use a local account. You'll probably have to wade past countless pesky "are you sure" confirmations each gushing gazillions of M$ account "advantages".

Pretty much ransomware at this point... I switched to Win10 Enterprise a year ago. So I'm good for a few more years at least. I went 2 years without any updates while on Win7 and never felt the worse for it lol!

It is appalling how many people are completely illiterate, but at the same time they can come up with new methods of intimidation and panic. However, they do not even realize that the beginning of these stories very often completely contradicts the end of the same story.
Of course, a Microsoft account is required to download apps and updates, and also if you want to back up and sync your files and other necessary Microsoft servers.
It is completely incomprehensible why it is good for some "people" to cause such stupid panic and fear.

Similarly, the nature of the thinking of those who boast that they have not installed innovations for years is completely incomprehensible. Do you really not understand what "good deed" you are doing with this behavior for the safety of other people? As a result, more and more personal information is being stolen, other people's accounts are being blocked, entire computer systems and servers are being hijacked, ransom is being extorted, and so on. Dear people, if you do not install the recommended security updates, you are actually criminals in real life!

And you shouldn't brag about that! Computers that are not up to date must have been completely blocked for a long time ago. And believe it or not - one day it will happen that all such computers will be blocked. There is simply no other way, cannot be, because malicious crime and cyber crime is growing every day, and one day things will happen that no one can control anymore. Believe it or not, it depends on your level of thinking and understanding. But if all this continues as until now have been, it will not be long before all sorts of strange things start to happen, such as warehouses and factories, and nuclear weapons will explode like on their own. This is the future if we all still looking at safety innovations through so-called pink glasses and we are so happy if have not installed updates.

Those who do not install updates are not heroes (!), they are criminals. - They are criminals against humanity.

Unfortunately, they do not understand it themselves today.

I haven't updated or installed any security updates for YEARS.. I "touch wood" have never and will never have ransomware installed on my computer.
Considering my OS is a pirate copy due to losing my original os due to a harddrive dying..

computer came with win98.. 27gb hdd.. Bought a whole new system.. 1st borrowed my brothers XP PRO, after he asked me to install it on his old win95 computer, then borrowed my nephews win7 that he didnt use.. he changed to linux.

MY original post.. i was thinking after they introduce this update.. and whats likely to come from that.. and 1 day i see "predict" that microsoft will MAKE their users have the internet, block you from using a local account and if you dont have access to a microsoft account.. then your system will become unusable.. and them being the robbing ...... i can see them changing the way you pay for your OS.. not only will they sell it like they are now except you will end up literally paying for it MONTHLY as well.

with the monthly charge being that of your microsoft account,, the ability to access your data on your computer, the "free" updates, and them no selling your information to other companies. And that will be added to ALL their OS's.. due to the fact websites will be told to block any and all computers running less than certain OS's or you'll need your MS account to access those sites aswell.

NOTE: this ISN'T what going to happen its what I PREDICT will happen.. saying in 20years.

now the above post.. quote " but at the same time they can come up with new methods of intimidation and panic." and then goes on to say about well just read from Dear People.. and saying about the nuclear weapons exploding on their own.. so is he actually talking about himself in the 3rd person.. or is that a oxymoron?

Well, if that's not enough, MSPowerUser reports that the latest preview build of Windows 11, the bypass loophole to create local account by terminating "Network Connection Flow" process are now patched and therefore unable to be used.

For those dodging having a Microsoft Account, there is still some hope, as previously users of Windows 11 Home were able to find loopholes to bypass the Microsoft Account requirement. Unfortunately with the latest preview build of Windows 11, the loophole of killing “Network Connection Flow” during setup has been closed, so now there’s no escape from handing your email address over to Microsoft.

In other words, you have to install the 22000.xx build (Windows 11 RTM) first and use the loophole to register a local account, before installing the major feature update (which are expected to bring the new build) which will be released somewhere later this year.

No need to fret people. Windows 10 is perfectly capable, supported (Until 2025) and even better than this Win Beta :D

    What after, you may ask?

    - Windows 12 will probably be around the corner at that time or Win11 will fix all (most*) of the issues it has compared to Win10.

    - Linux will mature more (with Proton for gaming), and will be an even better alternative.

That's how to tell when a Windows version is mature and usable... Microsoft starts making and releasing a new version... :P

Yeah it somehow needs to justify releasing a new version.
