Word for the web is a very capable text editor that you can use for free to view and edit documents. While it offers the most important features from the desktop app, it still misses a lot of options and capabilities that are available in Word for Windows and Mac. Today, Microsoft is taking Word for the web one step closer to its older siblings by introducing improved header and footer controls.
With today's update, Word for the web lets you edit document headers and footers directly on the canvas. The app also received a new contextual ribbon tab and a few extra capabilities, such as the ability to remove headers and footers separately, set different headers and footers for the first page or odd and even pages, and customize page numbers.
Microsoft says the update is part of its ongoing effort to provide a more consistent experience in Word across Windows, Mac, and the web. Now, editing headers and footers is more intuitive and familiar—just double-click the header or footer area and start editing content in-place without any overlays. The updated experience also makes it easier to see what part of the document you are editing, with parts of the document that are not being edited appearing slightly faded away.
Finally, the new "Header & Footer" tab now provides additional features, such as the ability to add page numbers and page count (you can also change the position of the counter), header position and cadence, footer text, and other options. Note that this tab is contextual and it only appears when you start editing the header or footer.
The updated header and footer experience is now available in Word for the web to all users. You can try it out by heading to word.cloud.microsoft. The announcement post is available here.
