Microsoft released Windows 11 build 27898 earlier this week, offering users some much-needed changes, such as small taskbar buttons, Quick Machine Recovery, and more improvements across the operating system. The build also has a fair share of known bugs, and one of them is quite hilarious. In addition to issues with File Explorer, Settings, and Remote Desktop, build 27898 brings back the old Windows Vista startup sound.

Deja vu? Yes, this is not the first time Microsoft has shipped a Windows 11 preview update with a classic startup chime. A couple of weeks ago, the bug first appeared in a fresh pair of Dev and Beta builds, stirring some conspiracy theories among Windows Insiders about Microsoft restoring this bit of Windows Vista on the hype of the macOS 26 launch with its Liquid Glass redesign. Microsoft debunked those claims (it was just a funny bug after all), and later, the company attempted to fix the bug but failed. Only after that, a new preview update restored the modern Windows 11 startup tune from 2021.

Now, with Canary Channel having a new build to try, the Windows Vista startup sound is back, raising questions among users about how that is even possible. To that, Brandon LeBlanc has the following to say in his X:

Therefore, if you use Windows 11 Canary builds on your system, enjoy the classic chime while it is still there. Sadly or fortunately, depending on your stance on Windows Vista, that startup sound is not going to stay in Windows 11, and the next update, whenever it comes, will most likely fix it.
