Microsoft had blocked a couple of recent Windows 11 updates on Intel-based Dell PCs. Now an emergency fix has been released.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released the newest Patch Tuesday under KB5101650, KB5099414 for Windows 11, and KB5099539 for Windows 10. Accompanying dynamic updates (KB5106056, KB5101719) were released as well. Interestingly, Microsoft has published an updated MCT, but it is with a different build, which is atypical. The latest updates address many security vulnerabilities, including a fix for a major flaw that was overlooked for the last decade.

While that is great, the company did acknowledge a major issue on Intel-based Dell devices wherein the previous Patch (for June) update, KB5095093, had started causing problems.

The bug was a result of incompatibility between Intel's Framework Processor Participant (FPP) driver and Dell PCs. For anyone not familiar, the Intel FPP is essentially a chipset driver that includes Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) and Intel Context Sensing Technology (CST). The former optimizes power and thermal performance to reduce overheating, minimize fan noise, and improve overall system efficiency; meanwhile, the latter detects a user's presence using features like Wake on Approach and Walk Away Lock, automatically waking the device when someone approaches and locking it when they leave, enhancing convenience, security, and energy efficiency.

As such, the tech giant noted that "affected devices might experience changes in performance, power consumption, or system behavior." Hence, the new KB5101650 July Patch Tuesday was blocked from installing.

Today, Microsoft has released a new emergency update as an OOB (Out-of-Band) release in order to fix the issue on such affected systems. On the release notes for KB5121767, the company writes: "Microsoft has released an out-of-band (OOB) update today to address an issue affecting a limited number of Dell devices with an Intel Innovation Platform Framework (Intel IPF) driver that could cause changes in performance, power consumption, or system behavior after installing recent Windows updates. ... Devices affected by this issue and that were temporarily prevented from receiving the July 2026 security update (KB5101650) can now install this OOB update, which includes all improvements from previous security and non-security updates, along with this additional fix."

Since this is an update specifically for devices which were affected by that Intel IPF incompatibility issue, Microsoft says that it is not necessary to install this on other systems. But as it is a cumulative update, you can install this one if you did not install the previous release. It is available for manual downloading at this link on the Microsoft Update Catalog website. Once you update, the build should be 26100.8894 on 24H2 PCs and 26200.8894 on 25H2 ones.

Meanwhile, for those managed PCs enrolled on hotpaching, the same is available under KB5121768.
