This week, Microsoft released a new Windows 11 preview build with a bunch more improvements and fixes. Although the update does not contain the recently showcased tabbed UI for File Explorer, there is one new hidden feature Microsoft has not mentioned. Those frequently using OneDrive in Windows 11 will be glad to know that the OS now lets you set OneDrive as the default folder in File Explorer (via Deskmodder).
Setting OneDrive as the default folder allows opening OneDrive right when you click the File Explorer icon on the taskbar or elsewhere. Previously, Windows 11 allowed opening File Explorer only on "Home" or "This PC." To change the "home page" to OneDrive, do the following:
- Open File Explorer and click the button with three dots on the toolbar.
- Select Options to open a new "Folder Options" window.
- Pick OneDrive from the "Open File Explorer to" list.
- Click Ok to save the changes.
After that, you can get to the OneDrive folder with fewer clicks by simply pressing Win + E or using a shortcut on the taskbar. Still, "Home" remains the default option, and you are free to use whatever you prefer. Unfortunately, Microsoft currently does not allow you to set a custom folder as the default (at least not officially).
Note: Microsoft says some Windows insiders may notice undocumented changes and experimental new features not intended for public release. That means some new capabilities may be temporary and will not make it to the final build as Microsoft tests the waters. Do not be surprised if Microsoft removes the option to set OneDrive as the default folder in future updates.
Microsoft is on track to release significant upgrades for File Explorer in Windows 11. In addition to the upcoming tabbed UI (learn how to force-enable it here), the company renamed the Quick Access section to "Home" and introduced the option to add files to favorites for quick access.
