VirtualBox 7.2.12 fixes a kernel panic bug on Arch Linux, along with a Fedora-proposed build fix and DX11 improvements for Windows guests.

Oracle just released VirtualBox 7.2.12, a general maintenance update that also fixes a well-known problem which certain Linux users had to endure for some time.

The biggest news is the fix for a nasty bug on Arch Linux, where starting a VM in 7.2.10 could trigger a full kernel freeze on the host. One user described the freeze as unrecoverable without a cold reset, since the journal cut off before anything useful got logged.

Arch's own packaging team confirmed this wasn't an issue with how the package was built, which meant the problem was sitting somewhere in VirtualBox itself. So, it was up to Oracle to deliver the fix, and it did.

If you've been avoiding VM startups on Arch for the past couple of weeks, you should definitely install the latest VirtualBox version, and the issue should be gone.

The second Linux fix is more of a build tooling cleanup. The update addresses issues with Fedora's YASM assembler, which VirtualBox's Guest Additions relied on and which is no longer maintained. Oracle implemented a patch from a Fedora packager that switches Guest Additions over to NASM, which is a modern replacement for YASM. Regular users won't notice a difference, but it matters for anyone maintaining VirtualBox packages downstream.

When it comes to Windows, Oracle says this update brings DX11 performance improvements and fixes, though the changelog doesn't go into specifics beyond that. So, you’ll have to use the new version for some time and see if it behaves any differently. If you're experiencing issues with VirtualBox on Windows, you should definitely install this update, as it includes all the Windows-related fixes introduced in previous versions.
