Shortly after the release of the stable version of Ubuntu 21.10, Canonical developers began developing the next release of the Ubuntu 22.04 distribution with long-term support. The new Ubuntu 22.04 LTS was code-named Jammy Jellyfish. In addition to publishing the development cycle schedule, developer Steve Langasek also provided some details about upcoming software package updates in his report.

With Ubuntu 22.04 comes support for Python 3.10 and finally the transition to the current version of OpenSSL 3.0. The desktop environment could most likely be GNOME 42, which would allow Ubuntu to catch up with GNOME again and always offer its users the latest version. As part of the updates, PHP 8.1 or Ruby 3.0 should also be added, while the GCC compiler collection will probably remain in the latest version 11, as GCC 12 has a scheduled release date in April (April) next year.

As always, hardware support should be improved not only with a newer version of the Linux kernel that could be available in version 5.15, 5.16, or even 5.17, depending on the length of their support. Users can also count on the upcoming software library for 3D graphics Mesa 22.0. According to the developers’ plans, the new system installer, which is based on the Flutter SDK with extended functions, such as the possibility of restoring the system from the installation image, will also be a complete novelty. This new system installer is set to replace Ubiquity, and another phase of public testing is currently underway to help resolve remaining issues or detect potential errors.

The release of the stable version of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is still plannedin the spring of 2022 and further development reports will gradually come over the coming months. The message to open the development of this version of Ubuntu can be found in the archive at lists.ubuntu.com .
