Do you want a simple homepage for your Edge browser? Try the Fluent New Tab extension.

On Windows 11, Microsoft Edge offers some customization for its New Tab page, but it has gradually grown busier, with news, widgets, Copilot, and content that many users never asked for. If you prefer a cleaner and more focused experience, there's now a compelling alternative.

A Reddit user known as snw-mint has created the Fluent New Tab, an Edge extension that replaces the default New Tab page with a native Windows 11 look and feel. The goal was to create a homepage that integrates seamlessly with the browser and operating system while remaining lightweight, clean, and privacy-focused.

Instead of adding more content, Fluent New Tab removes clutter. The extension closely follows the same Fluent Design language, resulting in a minimalist layout that feels like part of the operating system rather than a third-party add-on.

Although Microsoft Edge itself continues to collect telemetry data, Fluent New Tab keeps everything local to your device. There is no cloud syncing, and all shortcuts and settings are stored in the browser. The extension also includes export and import options, making it easy to restore your setup or move the settings to another device.

The extension also follows the browser and system color modes, supporting both dark and light color schemes.

If you use the Microsoft 365 suite of apps or Google Workspace, the extension lets you launch these web apps from a dedicated app launcher menu.

Because the extension replaces the default New Tab experience, Edge may automatically turn it off. If that happens, you can re-enable it at any time from the Extensions page. Fluent New Tab is available directly from the official Microsoft Edge Add-ons store, and its source code is open-source and available on GitHub for transparency or for anyone who wishes to contribute.

One of the most noticeable differences compared to Edge's built-in customization settings is the absence of a news feed (which I really appreciate). Instead of headlines and cards, you get a clean grid of shortcuts. Fluent New Tab supports up to four rows of shortcuts, while Edge's default experience limits you to two.

The extension also includes a search box with the option to switch between search engines such as Bing and Google, along with control over search suggestions. You can also enable a simple weather widget if you want quick glanceable information without overwhelming the page.

Fluent New Tab isn't meant to replace Microsoft Edge's customization for everyone. Rather, it's an alternative for users who want a simpler, distraction-free New Tab page that still looks and feels native to Windows 11.

Early feedback has been positive. One user commented, "Your new tab looks more Fluent than Microsoft doing themselves." Another added, "Now my Microsoft Edge looks more modern." Other users have already started requesting additional options, such as hiding the search bar and improving weather customization.
