Windows 11 still includes a barely used dial-up era Phone Dialer app that dates all the way back to Windows 95.

A few days ago, we highlighted how an ancient piece of software still exists in Windows 11, even though it doesn't really serve the mass market. That was Character Map, originally released over 30 years ago. However, if you look closer, you'll unearth other fossils in Windows 11's code too, that seemingly just exist for backward compatibility reasons.

The legacy utility this time around is Phone Dialer, which does exactly what it says on the tin. Or at least it did, when it launched. It was initially made available through Windows 95, and it essentially allowed users to call others through an installed modem connected to a telephone line. Ancient dark arts, I know.

Although it received a few updates in subsequent versions of Windows, it has remained fairly stagnant for the past several years, which isn't surprising as landline usage has significantly declined. If you launch the app (type dialer in Windows Run or Windows Search), you'll be greeted with an error message explaining that you don't have the required hardware needed to make a phone call.

The UI of the software itself is pretty intuitive. It shows you a number pad that you can use via your mouse, but you can also directly add contact numbers through your keyboard. There are also eight buttons on the side which act as a speed dial, allowing you to save the names and contact numbers of personnel.

It's also very interesting to note that there seems to be no official word on Phone Dialer's deprecation. In theory, you could still use it, and there are some jokes around the internet that the only reason for its continued existence is that some customers depends on it for UI automation.

In reality, there are likely very few customers, if any, who continue to use Phone Dialer. Microsoft has relatively modern alternatives that integrate with your smartphone, like Phone Link, but it's still fascinating to see such an old piece of history still present in Windows 11 as remnants of a time long gone.
