Report: Microsoft is bringing back the ability to move the taskbar in Windows 11

Microsoft recently declared its intent to focus on fixing Windows 11 in 2026 to address key "pain points" in the operating system and address things that receive the biggest criticism. According to a new report, part of that plan is finally bringing back the ability to change where the taskbar appears on the screen.

Windows has had the ability to move the taskbar to the top or either side of the screen for decades. Heck, this feature is nearly as old as the taskbar and the Start menu, going back all the way into the 90s. However, in 2021, things changed when Microsoft released Windows 11. The company redesigned the taskbar and the Start menu from the ground up. To many, it felt like a rushed, botched job, as many beloved features were crippled or just straight away removed, including the ability to reorient the taskbar.

Users have been ranting about this over the last five years, only to fall on Microsoft's deaf ears. At some point, Microsoft even said that changing the taskbar position "was not important," further enraging frustrated customers. Now, it appears that Microsoft is finally waking up.

Windows Central reports that Microsoft is already working on two important features for the taskbar: the ability to move it to the top or sides and the ability to change its size. If all goes well, these two features will be announced somewhere in the summer.

It is not all about features. Microsoft vowed to address other points of criticism, particularly poor performance, overabundance of questionable AI features, poor stability, and bugs. While all of that sounds very promising and refreshing, do not get your hopes too high. With everything that is going on with the AI frenzy, it is better to praise Microsoft after it delivers, not when it promises.
