One X user uploaded a setup file for Windows Movie Maker 6.0 to the Internet Archive. And, according to many reports, it works on Windows 11.
If you grew up making home videos with jarring transitions and slideshows for your school project/summer vacation photos, you already know what Windows Movie Maker meant to a generation of PC users. Long before TikTok and CapCut, this was the tool millions of people used to make their first “serious video projects."
But time passes, and technology moves forward, and good old Movie Maker was discontinued years ago. It got replaced by tools like ClipChamp that bring more features, but certainly lack the soul of the original.
But Movie Maker still hasn't completely disappeared. X user Katie (@skylerdagirl) uploaded a setup file for Windows Movie Maker 6.0 to the Internet Archive, and according to her post, it's tested and working on Windows 7, 10, and 11.
So, if you’d like to feel the Movie Maker nostalgia again, or simply need a break from ever more complicated editing tools and AI videos, you should at least check this project out. And while you're at it, check out our vintage Movie Maker review from 16 years ago.
Ever wanted to use Windows Movie Maker 6.0 again but unsure where to get it for modern Windows?
Well, "want" no longer!
I've uploaded a setup for exactly that on The Internet Archive. Tested on Windows 7, 10, & 11, all working on each.

However, there are a few nuances you should be aware of. Getting classic software to run on a modern OS is never guaranteed, so temper expectations a bit. Windows occasionally flags or removes old executables through SmartScreen or Defender, especially ones pulled from community archives rather than an official source.
That said, Katie's post has racked up over 200,000 views and thousands of reposts, with plenty of people confirming the software works for them too. Still, it never hurts to be careful.
