macOS 26.2, which is currently in beta testing, introduced a new feature that aims to make you look better during video calls. It places a virtual ring of light on the screen to illuminate your face and improve the image quality, particularly in dark environments. One of Microsoft's VPs decided to bring a similar thing to Windows. Lo and behold, Windows Edge Light. Currently available as a standalone app, Windows Edge Light might soon make its way to PowerToys.
Windows Edge Light is one of those well-made, small, and convenient apps. It uses native Windows 11 UI elements, it has a small disk footprint, and it has all the necessary features for its purpose. For example, you can adjust the light intensity, toggle it with shortcuts, click through the overlay, keep it always on top, and more. Of course, a blank Excel spreadsheet or a File Explorer window can also do the job, but Windows Edge Light feels like a much more refined and elegant solution.
Utilities like Windows Edge Light make great additions to PowerToys, Microsoft's set of various tools for all sorts of users, like the recently introduced Light Switch. Clint Rutkas, PowerToys lead at Microsoft, replied to Neowin's question about bringing Windows Edge Light to PowerToys, saying that "our team works deeply with his team."
While this is not an explicit confirmation, it still implies that Windows Edge Light might make its way to PowerToys. If not, you can still get it as a standalone application and run it whenever you have a video call in a dim environment. Modern screens can get plenty bright, and tools like Windows Edge Light may save you some cash on buying dedicated lights just for video calls.
