Microsoft will end OneDrive Sync support for Windows 10 version 22H1 and earlier on August 15, 2026, urging users to upgrade to 22H2 or Windows 11.
The OneDrive Sync client is the background service that ensures that your PC's content syncs to your OneDrive cloud storage, so that you don't have to manually upload and download the latest version of your files. It offers functionalities like two-way sync, offline access, Known Folder Move (KFM), Files On-Demand, and more. It's bundled with Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations by default, but Microsoft has finally announced an end of support date for the latter.
Although support for Windows 10 version 22H1 ended way back in December 2022, OneDrive sync has been working perfectly on the operating system since then and has also received new features. Now, Microsoft has announced via Message Center advisory MC1426708 that OneDrive sync will lose support on Windows 10 version 22H1 and earlier from August 15, 2026.
This means that it will no longer receive new features, bug fixes, or security updates. It won't stop working, but Microsoft says that it will no longer be able to guarantee functionality beyond that date. So, if you run into any problems after August 15, you're out of luck.
As a workaround, Microsoft has recommended updating to at least Windows 10 version 22H2 to continue receiving support for OneDrive sync. This is the last major release of Windows 10, but we know that Microsoft has extended support until at least October 2027 if you enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
If you do upgrade your OS to version 22H2, OneDrive sync will continue receiving updates till October 10, 2028. While that is still a ways off, Microsoft says that it is ideal that you upgrade to Windows 11, if possible, so you don't have to worry about the October 2028 deadline either.
All in all, it's not surprising that Microsoft is axing the OneDrive client on legacy versions of Windows. It's interesting that OneDrive sync will continue working though, but impacted customers will have to use it at their own risk.
