OneDrive may soon suggest smarter, context-aware file names with Copilot, but it's unclear if this feature can be disabled.
OneDrive is a pretty powerful cloud storage service that also offers other functionalities such as offline access, Known Folder Move (KFM), Files On-Demand, and much more. Recently, Microsoft also shared some details about what's coming next for OneDrive, including hero links and OCR integration for PDF content in OneDrive mobile. Now, it has announced yet another useful feature for its service, which might save some time for many.
In its latest Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry, Microsoft has announced Suggested Rename for OneDrive. As the name suggests (pun intended), this is a Copilot-powered capability that offers meaningful file names for content uploaded on OneDrive. These descriptive, clear names will be provided after Microsoft's AI model analyzes the file's content, which means that the names will be context-aware.
Copilot will surface three recommended names for a file with a rename dialog box, and the user will be able to simply click and select the most suitable name. Presumably, they will also be able to dismiss the recommendations and retain their existing file name.
These recommendations will pop up in a toast notification after you upload a file to OneDrive, or when you attempt to rename a file manually. Suggested Rename will work for the following files:
-
Microsoft Office documents
- Word (DOCX)
- PowerPoint (PPTX)
- Excel (XLSX)
-
Other document formats
- Markdown (MD)
- Images
This feature is expected to land on the web version of OneDrive in June 2026, but it's worth highlighting that just because an upcoming capability is being tracked on the Roadmap doesn't mean that everything about it is set in stone. It may change significantly by the time of general availability, get delayed, or be canceled completely for any reason. Also, with regards to this particular feature, Microsoft hasn't clarified if users will have an option to disable Suggested Rename, as some users may find this Copilot utility a bit intrusive too.
Hope you enjoyed this news post. Feedback welcome.
