Earlier this month, Microsoft released the August 2025 security update for Windows 10 and 11. Shortly after, a rather concerning report emerged about Windows updates breaking SSDs and corrupting data. Shortly after that, Microsoft acknowledged the reports and promised to investigate. Now, the company says you should point your fingers elsewhere, and Windows 11 has nothing to do with the problem.

Microsoft posted a new update on the Admin Portal, stating the following:

After thorough investigation, Microsoft has found no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media. As always, we continue to monitor feedback after the release of every Windows update, and will investigate any future reports.

Interestingly, Microsoft is not the only one claiming that the reported issues have nothing to do with the update. Phison, a popular maker of SSD controllers, recently said that its comprehensive checks found no problems with the August 2025 security updates and various SSDs:

Phison dedicated over 4,500 cumulative testing hours to the drives reported as potentially impacted and conducted more than 2,200 test cycles. We were unable to reproduce the reported issue, and no partners or customers have reported that the issue affected their drives at this time.

It is clear that the problem is far from being resolved, and we will hear more updates on it. Meanwhile, if you have already installed the August 2025 update, it is recommended to take it easy with your drive and avoid heavy files. If you have not installed the update yet, you can pause Windows Update and wait for Microsoft to release more information on the issue.

While the company is busy investigating the SSD problem, a bunch of other issues wait for their resolution. For example, Microsoft recently confirmed problems with NDI streaming performance after installing the August 2025 update.
