Earlier this week, Microsoft released a new non-security update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, which introduces several big changes, such as the redesigned Start menu, reworked battery indicators, and more. However, the update is not mandatory at this point, and it is probably safe to say that most users will skip it and won't bother to download it manually. However, there are a few reasons to get KB5067036, even if you do not care about the redesigned Start menu.
In the latest non-security update for Windows 11, Microsoft is adding two important Windows Update changes. For one, the company fixed the bug causing Windows Update to fail with error 0x800f0983. Yes, Microsoft is fixing Windows Update problems with another Windows update, but that is just how things work in the world of the software giant. Here is what the company says in the release notes:
Improved: Addressed underlying issue which can cause Windows Update to fail to install with error 0x800f0983.
If you do not have error 0x800f0983 on your system, you still might want to install KB5067036 because it addresses a very irritating Windows Update quirk, when, instead of applying the pending update and shutting down the system when selecting "Update and Shut down," Windows would install the update and restart instead. This buggy behavior should be finally addressed in KB5067036, according to Microsoft:
Improved: Addressed underlying issue which can cause “Update and shutdown” to not actually shut down your PC after updating.
In addition to fixing Windows Update and making it less irritating, KB5067036 fixed the bug with the non-working Media Creation Tool app on Arm64 devices. Microsoft also resolved problems with text rendering, network issues, protected content playback, screen readers, and authentication. You can find the complete changelog here.
If you want to install KB5067036 right now, head to Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates. The app will then offer to download and install the update.
