    Summary

    •     Windows 10 ESU extended to Oct 12, 2027 — personal PCs get one more year of security updates.
    •     To join ESU you need Windows 10 22H2, an admin Microsoft account; enroll via Backup, 1,000 Rewards, or $30 license.
    •     After Oct 12, 2027 Windows 10 stops updates; PCs work but risk malware, compliance and app issues.

In an unexpected move, Microsoft has given Windows 10 users an extra year of free security updates before they have to update to Windows 11, which means you’ve got extra time to get ready for the switch and keep your PC safe.

Windows 10 came out way back in July 2015, and support officially ended on October 14, 2025. After that, your only options were to upgrade, try a cloud option, or stick with your current PC using the Windows 10 Extended Security Program (ESU), which was originally set to end on October 13, 2026.

But good news! The ESU program for personal-use devices will be extended for an additional year, with coverage now available through October 12, 2027, a spokesperson confirmed in an update to the Windows 10 ESU documentation blog post.

What does this mean for users?

This extension gives users more time to transition to a new Windows 11 PC while they continue to receive critical security updates. If you’re still on Windows 10 and want to save some extra cash to upgrade, you can opt into ESU any time until the program ends on October 12, 2027. If you’re already enrolled, your coverage will automatically continue through that date—no action needed.

There are a few hoops to jump through before you can join ESU. Your device needs to be running Windows 10 version 22H2 (Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Workstations) and have all the latest updates. You’ll also need an admin-level Microsoft account. Local accounts will have to switch, and child accounts can’t join.

You’ve got three ways to get into ESU: turn on Windows Backup for free, use 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or just buy a one-year license for $30 (plus tax). You can use your existing ESU license on up to 10 devices once you’re enrolled, so that’s something.

Why is updating to Windows 11 so important?

After this new deadline, Microsoft will stop sending out updates and support for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, but it’ll be more open to viruses and malware.

If you’re a business running Windows 10 after support ends, it could be tough to stay compliant. Some apps might stop working correctly, too, since Windows 10 won’t get new features anymore. Microsoft Defender Antivirus will continue to receive security updates on Windows 10 until October 2028. Microsoft 365 apps will continue to receive security updates on Windows 10 until October 2028, and feature updates until August 2026. These are just to help you move to Windows 11, but don’t expect tech support.

While this extension is welcome news for Windows 10 users, it’s worth noting that Microsoft is still pushing users to transition to Windows 11 or a new Copilot+ PC as soon as they can. To make sure your move is as seamless as possible, Microsoft recommends using Windows Backup, which allows you to safely transfer your personal files, photos, and settings—ensuring your data is ready the moment you sign in to your new device.
