    The loophole has a loophole

Yesterday, we wrote how Microsoft’s Windows 11 won’t technically leave millions of PCs behind — the company told us it won’t actually block you from installing Windows 11 on a PC with an older CPU, so long as you download and manually install an ISO file all by yourself. But it turns out even that technicality has a technicality. Microsoft is now threatening to withhold Windows Updates from your copy of Windows 11 — potentially even security updates — if you take that route.

We’re not sure why the company didn’t mention it in our original briefing, but Microsoft has since told The Verge that unsupported PCs won’t be entitled to receive Windows Updates, and that even security and driver updates may be withheld.

It’s quite possible this is just a cover-your-ass measure on Microsoft’s part. It’s hard to imagine that Microsoft wouldn’t issue critical security patches, when we’ve often seen the company extend support and offer the occasional free patch even after it’s shelved an operating system for good. If I were in Microsoft’s shoes, I might just want to discourage people from thinking I was offering a warranty and technical support for every possible PC configuration under the sun to avoid potential legal headaches down the road. Better to underpromise and overdeliver.

But it’s also possible Microsoft genuinely does mean to withhold patches at some point in the future — potentially even at launch. Microsoft declined to clarify things further at this time, which suggests the company’s perfectly happy for us to assume this is a genuine threat.

It’s not just security updates at stake, by the way: If you’re unwilling or unable to replace your older-than-Intel 8th-Gen-CPU, Windows 11 could theoretically be an operating system where you go back to the days of manually downloading driver updates for all your hardware, something I haven’t needed to think about for years. Windows 10 wowed me from day one by seamlessly working with my aging laptop, so it’d suck if that’s not the case anymore. (Admittedly, the generic drivers that ship with Windows are often good enough.)

Feature updates are probably less of a big deal: if you’re the kind of person who would install a Windows 11 ISO on your computer to begin with, you can probably download a newer ISO the next time there’s a major Windows update that you want, and do an in-place-install. I just reformatted my machine with the Windows 10 2H21 ISO, and I barely had any patching to do afterwards. But I suppose Microsoft could change its mind about system requirements for future ISOs, too.

Why leave us in the dark? My best guess is the one I offered yesterday, when I wrote how “The Windows 11 upgrade situation just got less and more confusing”: the company seemingly wants to push Windows users to buy a new PC, whether they need one or not. Yesterday, the company told us about a loophole that could placate some of the company's vocal power users who don’t want to give up their old hardware. But if that loophole gets in the way of Microsoft’s plans, the company is reserving the right to make it far less attractive.

I wish those inmates who are running that asylum known as Microsoft would make up their minds.

Nadella MUST drop his elitist son-of-a-civil-servant-doing-the-plebes-a-favor mentality and hands-off corporate management style, and start focusing all the inconsistencies and lack of user confidence that the upcoming Windows 11 is turning into.  He has got to establish himself as something other than just a figure head at launch events.  Oh, wait, that might mean he has to stop delegating and actually do his job.  [Sarcasm Intended]

Until Microsoft is able to figure out what direction to go in, and then go in that direction with reasonable consistency, they do not have my confidence.  Neither does Windows 11.

Jesus. Windows 10 is fully supported till 2025, are you seriously telling me you won't have a "new" PC that won't have at max, 8 odd year old hardware inside?

As someone who's currently running 11 on one PC (UI semi sucks and there's device lag *build 160 dunno bout new 168 build) with two others running 10..

    BIG f'in deal.

Give it a year or two, or four.. see if 11 offers anything significantly better than 10 does then (ATM I don't think it does) and evaluate the ISO upgrade (with potential lack of some updates) then.

    ATM BIG WHOOP.
Why does everyone need the very latest OS on their old hardware? Try and learn to cope, I'm certainly not in a rush to upgrade the other two to 11 any time soon.

In fact I will be doing exactly as I said you should above for those two systems, there's nothing of consequence your missing out on.

Microsoft aren't crystal ball readers they don't know what will or won't work with unsupported systems, they're just trying their best to make everything on 11 go smoothly and setting expectations accordingly, relax.

Linus tech tips reported that whilst they dont support older processors for upgrades, a new installation does apparently work on most systems though "driver support may be an issue".

As a windows 7 user.. with no intention of upgrading to windows anything else.. I can say with hand on heart i know people who are still to this day using windows XP.

I use to belong to a windows tech group on facebook.. helping people with their windows issues and providing free fixes where possible..

example. the dreaded windows cant boot loop. as in window needs to repair.. then it tells you theres nothing for it to repair..

then you need to boot from flash drive to repair it.. good OLE windows 10.. infact 90% of issues where windows 10.. usually after the so called windows update after a tuesday.. or example 2: people printers no working yet before the "security updates" they worked perfectly fine..
I have no faith in windows 11 being anything better..
like the villian in the bond movie.. Tomorrow never dies.. is our operating system ready,, yes sir and as asked for its full of bugs so people will have to update for years to come.. seems the mindset of MICROSH*T..
I can see them loosing money in the coming years.. with people / businesses switching to other operating systems..I think microsoft have forgotten they are not the only OS out there.

Yeah they'll only be testing  on supported hardware I'd say, which is why such systems at least now and even maybe a year from now? depending on what's offered to be better off on Windows 10.

People just want the new shiny stuff, doesn't matter what's different about it. People can be such superficial creatures.

Well ATM I can't say it really is much unless you favor security, but remember that five years from now things could be different.  If anything Windows 11 is 10 without the hardware/blue screen issues haha, not that I've really had any such issues aside from the (it seems) usual eventual Windows component corruption that happens on almost every damn system I have.
Recall that part of the reason why they set these requirements was because of stability, so maybe with 11 we achieve near 7 levels of reliability with this OS now.

Honestly for most people I think 10 is actually pretty good.

That movie part was obviously a reference to Microsoft.

MS are certainly not "threatening" anything, this is just the culture we live in today where anyone not getting what they want feels threatened.

They've told you what the minimum specs are, told you you can find a way around them if you so wish and are telling you
THAT BASED ON THEIR MINIMUM SPECS THEY CAN'T IN GOOD CONSCIENCE TELL YOU EVERY UPDATE WILL WORK FOR YOUR DEVICE, it's as simple as that.

What YOU want, is MS to keep minimum specs with their new software to whatever ancient computer you currently own regardless of the security implications or extra workload required.

This without paying a dime.  Get off your high horse. MS are a threat to my self worth! *cries in a corner*

Or you could just spend money... maybe get a job that actually allows you to live rather than just feed, clothe n hopefully house yourself n run some old PC you still think is "up to date" 🙄

You: *Spends money on PC once* I plan on holding on to this PC until Covid takes me.
I want 20 years of OS updates minimum or I boycott your entire line of products n QQ in the forums about being Microshafted

You: *Spends money once on mobile phone* gets 2-3 years of updates, maybe couple of extra for security updates.
I'm fine with this, thanks for your great product. Look forward to the next one in a few years time.

Leave Microsoft alone and  if you care about being up tp date like you SEEM TO BE upgrade your ancient PC, remember you still have four years of whatever security and QoL MS deems fit to give you, enjoy.
