The copy-paste dialog in Windows 11 (also known as the file operation dialog or copy/move dialog) is a pretty ancient piece of Windows UI. The current version was introduced in Windows 8 back in 2012 with a bunch of upgrades over Windows 7, such as an expanded mode with a progress bar combined with a file transfer speed chart. Thirteen years later, Microsoft is finally improving the UI with some much-needed changes.
It was recently discovered that Microsoft is finally adding dark mode support to various parts of Windows 11, such as file properties, copy-paste dialog, and more. With the latest Windows 11 preview builds that were released in the Dev and Beta channels, Microsoft is adding a bunch of other improvements on top of dark mode support.
@phantomofearth discovered that the file operation dialog ditched its iconic green accent for a blue one to match Windows 11's stock color palette:
All these updates are a work in progress, and there are still some rough surfaces here and there. For example, the interface still uses a green progress bar in compact mode. Also, it does not follow your system accent color, but at this point, we do not know if Microsoft plans to implement such a capability or leave the updated progress bar blue.
Microsoft is preparing the updated file operation dialog for its public debut, so expect to see more changes in future builds. It is great to see Microsoft finally fixing Windows 11's undercooked dark mode, eliminating the need for third-party apps and mods that some people use to fix the system's theming inconsistencies. Sadly, Windows 11 still does not know how to change themes on schedule, but this missing feature will soon be addressed with PowerToys.
