Earlier this month, Microsoft acknowledged a funny and nostalgic bug in the latest Windows 11 preview builds. By accident, developers replaced Windows 11's startup chime with the 20-year-old Windows Vista startup sound. While conspiracy theorists speculate that it was intentional in light of Apple's "Liquid Glass" announcement (Microsoft denies any allegations), developers at the software giant are working hard to restore harmony and bring back the proper startup sound.
In the latest Windows 11 preview builds, which were released earlier this week, Microsoft attempted to fix the incorrect startup sound, but only the Beta Channel received the necessary fix. The one from the Dev Channel, however, still has the incorrect chime. In the now-updated release notes, Microsoft says that "this fix for this issue unfortunately is not working correctly in this build." Brandon LeBlanc from the Windows Insider team acknowledged the failed attempt in replies to a user on X:
This week's Dev and Beta channels have nearly identical changelogs, so it is a bit odd to see a fix working differently. It shows that despite apparent similarities, these builds have many different bits under the hood, and things do not always work as expected in the Windows 11 preview program.
In case you missed it, this week's Windows 11 preview builds introduced two big changes: a new Home page for Recall and the ability to change where system indicators appear on the screen. While it is cool to have some extra customization, Microsoft still does not want to address popular feedback requests like moving the taskbar to the top or sides. However, the company delivered quite a few user-requested changes, so not all hope is lost.
