Many users will lose access to this popular Microsoft app soon, all content will be deleted

Microsoft is ending Whiteboard for personal accounts, blocking edits on August 22 and deleting all consumer whiteboards after September 5.

Way back in 2018, Microsoft released its Whiteboard app after a year of leaks and previews. This was at a time when Microsoft was pushing touch-based experiences in Windows 10, so Whiteboard served as a freeform canvas where you could write, draw, or simply brainstorm ideas. Although interest in touch-based interfaces waned gradually, the Redmond firm continued to promote the app as a collaborative tool for enterprise customers. Now, Microsoft has announced that it is ditching the consumer experience of the app completely.

As spotted by Reddit user dotso666 on r/Windows11, Microsoft has begun showing a warning to Whiteboard users with personal accounts, informing that they won't be able to create or edit whiteboards after August 22, 2026, which is less than a month away at this point. They'll still be able to continue viewing and exporting their existing whiteboards until September 5, 2026, after which their content will be permanently deleted. This news item slipped by us, but we were able to verify its authenticity after downloading the Whiteboard app from the Microsoft Store and reproducing the warning.

It's worth noting that Microsoft isn't killing off Whiteboard completely. Customers with a Microsoft Business account will be able to use it beyond the aforementioned dates too, but it's obvious that the firm wants to limit its usage to organizations only.

Whiteboard users on Reddit have expressed dissatisfaction at the move, with some suggesting alternatives like Markerpad, Miro, tldraw, Excalidraw, and more.

Microsoft hasn't shared a public reason for this partial retirement yet, but it likely has to do with whiteboards just not being that useful in personal environments. It's no doubt that Whiteboard is a powerful utility that also offers a bunch of built-in templates to get work done faster, but realistically, there are better keyboard-based options out there to accomplish the same.
