Ubuntu 25.10 "Questing Quokka" will reach end of life on July 9, meaning it will no longer get security updates.
Anyone still running Ubuntu 25.10 should update within the next three days if they wish to continue receiving security updates, as Canonical will end support for that interim release on July 9. While your system won’t immediately become insecure, the risks to you will build over time as more and more patches are released that your system doesn’t get.
Updating Ubuntu 25.10 to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is super easy and quick. Just open up the update manager, and you should see the option to upgrade to the latest release. Once you initiate it, the update will download, and then it will be applied. It might be a good idea to take a data backup and set a few hours aside for the upgrade, but generally, it’s a stable process and given download speeds today it probably won’t even take an hour of your time.
Ubuntu 25.10 “Questing Quokka” was released in October 2025 and, just like other interim releases, it got nine months of support. Most users opt for the Long-Term Support versions, which get five years of support. The main benefit of interim releases is that you get to try new desktop features faster, and there might be newer third-party software packages available in the repositories.
If you’re getting the feeling of deja vu reading this article, it’s because we mentioned the impending end of life in May. At the time, we mentioned that Canonical had just opened up the upgrade path from Ubuntu 25.10 to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. We are reminding you again now because the end-of-life date is so close and requires immediate action.
For anyone on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS wondering when 26.04 LTS will be available as an upgrade, Canonical is planning to open the upgrade path after Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS arrives in August, so there is not long for that now.
