Over a billion people turned to TikTok in 2021 to be entertained, learn new things, unleash their creativity, and treat themselves to an occasional "bones day."

Now, as we prepare to say goodbye to another year, the social network is looking back on 12 months of trends, moments, and movements.

"For us, 2021 was a year of connection and we've seen people on TikTok laughing together, entertaining us, starting cultural phenomenons, and teaching us new things," Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Pappas said in a statement. "It's been incredible to see the depths of entertainment and creativity from this community, and we're delighted to celebrate all the ways we've come together this year on TikTok."

TikTok videos transcend culture and borders: From Argentina to Zimbabwe, everyone can appreciate drone dancing, aquarium trips, and photo filters. US feeds in particular showcased the year's biggest moments in comedy, athletics, and art with trending dance moves, an Olympic gold, and a disappearing act.

"Whether TikTok videos make you smile or laugh in unexpected ways, one thing's for sure: our community sparks joy," a blog announcement said. This year, animals, significant others, and adorable kids tugged at the heartstrings of users across the globe.

The Playlist

In 2021, trending songs on TikTok broke out from A-list and emerging artists, spanning a diverse range of genres. Unsurprisingly, one of Spotify's top-streaming global artists of 2021, Olivia Rodrigo, made the US list with her hit song "drivers license." Also on repeat were Cardi B, Justin Bieber, and relative newcomers Popp Hunna and Masked Wolf.

Breakthrough Stars

From concept to craze, technology, education, and fashion communities saw the most global breakthroughs this year. "We're humbled and excited to see so many creators entertaining fans and connecting with communities," the blog said. "And are proud to see them launch careers on and off the platform."

In the US, inspirational lifestyles, hilarious reactions, and new music thrust creators like Chef Puff, Oneya D'Amelio, Lissette Eduardo, Dr. Shah, Mikayl Nogueira, and Jonathan Graziano (and pug Noodles) into the 2021 spotlight.
