Mozilla released Firefox 96.0.2 to the Stable channel on January 20, 2022. The new version of the browser fixes three issues that affect Facebook, LastPass and audio play on Linux.

Firefox 96.0.2 is already available. Firefox is configured to download and install updates automatically, but users may speed up the process by selecting Menu > Help > About Firefox. The window that opens displays the current version of the browser. A check is run to find out if an update is available; if that is the case, it is downloaded and installed automatically on the system.

The official release notes list three fixes:

    • Fixed an issue that caused tab height to display inconsistently on Linux when audio was played (bug 1714276)
    • Fixed an issue that caused Lastpass dropdowns to appear blank in Private Browsing mode (bug 1748158)
    • Fixed a crash encountered when resizing a Facebook app (bug 1746084)

The first fix resolves an issue in Firefox for Linux. According to the bug report, Firefox on Linux used to change the height of the tab bar when audio was played in the browser. Firefox displays a sound indicator in tab items when it detects audio playback; this indicator seems to have triggered the resize behavior on Linux. The update to Firefox 96.0.2 resolves the issue.

The second issue is specific to the LastPass extension. It occurred only in private browsing mode and caused the Lastpass dialog window to be displayed without any information (blank in other words). The issue is fixed when users update to the new version of Firefox.

The third and final issue listed in the release notes caused Facebook applications to crash Firefox when the application window is resized. At least some Facebook applications are affected by this, and users who use these applications may want to update to Firefox 96.0.2 to address the issue.

Firefox 96.0.2 is the third Firefox release of 2022. Mozilla released Firefox 96.0 Stable on January 11, 2022, and Firefox 96.0.1 shortly thereafter to fix critical connection issues.

The next stable version of Firefox will be released on February 8, 2022.

Going back 3 or 4 weeks , out of the blue I started to have problems with Firefox. The cursor wheel would spin endlessly when I clicked on a program

icon and when I tried to kill Firefox using Process Lasso it wouldn't cease. When I tried to bring up the Windows task manager (using Alt Ctrl Del) it

wouldn't appear, and if I clicked on any other program shortcuts my desktop screen would appear like it had tissue paper over it, then a green screen

menu appeared with options:- Lock this computer, Switch User, Log Off, Change Password, Start Task Manager, Cancel. Before I could decide what to do

the screen would go black and I had to power off the computer. On restart everything returned to normal. This behaviour repeated after about 3-4 days and

always I had to power off and restart my computer.

Now, this seems like some "infection", but I scanned with ESET and Malwarebytes and nothing was found, and the pattern was always the same. Then I read the

article on GHacks about users having "connection problems" with Firefox. There was a temporary "fix" offered while Mozilla were preparing a permanent solution.

So now I realized that my Firefox problem, (although I'm not sure if any of the other users suffered exactly the same details as I have described), might be related

to the reported Firefox "connection problems". I read the GHacks posts from other guys and one of them said he "flushed the startup cache" after every Firefox update

and had experienced no problems. So I tried that and used my computer for hours without any repeat of the problem. Just at that moment (14th January) Mozilla released 96.0.1

so I updated to 96.0.1, flushed the startup cache again and my machine continued working with no problem. Soon after came Firefox 96.0.2 (20th January), and after updating to that version I repeated the aforementioned flushing of startup cache. Now 8 days have passed with me using the computer constantly and no repeat of the problem.

Obviously Mozilla's updates have addressed the problem...but it's worth noting that before they released 96.0.1, flushing the startup cache solved the problem for me.

I'm posting this in case anyone else had similar "connection problems" to mine. (Windows Pro (x64) by the way).:dance::dance:
