Microsoft details June 2026 Excel updates with smarter Copilot, 30+ new file types, PivotTable fixes, workbook rules, and more.

Microsoft adds new features to Excel throughout the month, which makes sense considering the spreadsheet software is extremely popular in a variety of environments. The company recently detailed all the new capabilities it introduced in Excel during May 2026, fixed a major Copilot limitation, and integrated new data connectors into the software. Now, it has highlighted all the enhancements made to the tool during June 2026.

Starting off with new capabilities now available in Excel for Windows, Mac, and the web. First off, we have Copilot personalization rules so that responses are tailored to your preferences. Next, commercial customers have the option to ground Copilot in Excel into more of their work data through the file picker which allows linkages to people, emails, meetings, channels, the web, Loop, and more. In the same vein, an additional 30+ file types are supported for analysis too, including JSON, XML, GIF, BMP, SVG, SQL, ASPX, and more.

Additionally, when PivotTables can't expand due to an obstruction, they will collapse into a single #SPILL! error cell so that you can diagnose the issue in a more focused manner. Finally, Microsoft has also added a highly requested feature to Excel by introducing navigable links in Copilot Chat so you can quickly jump across specific changes within the context of the response. Due to its high demand, this enhancement has been tagged as "Feedback In Action (#FIA)".

Switching gears to Excel for Windows and Mac, we have custom Copilot skills available only to Insiders for now; you can check out our coverage on this topic here. Lastly, Microsoft introduced workbook rules for Copilot, which can be documented in a separate .Rules sheet, as explained here.

As is evident, this was a pretty big month for Excel customers, and it's a nice change of pace since Microsoft typically only brings a couple of improvements through the month. It will be interesting to see what July 2026 holds.
