Google Chrome is ending support for macOS 11 Big Sur

From time to time, Google Chrome drops support for legacy operating systems, likely because the development costs are not worth it for a shrinking user base. Last month, we learned that Chrome 139 is dropping support for two ancient versions of Android, namely Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 9.0 Pie. Now, it appears that this release of Chrome will end support for macOS 11 as well.

An entry on the Chrome Platform Status page indicates that Chrome 138 will be the last version of the browser to support macOS 11.0. This operating system, also known as Big Sur, was announced back in June 2020 and was globally rolled out in November of the same year. It was succeeded by macOS 12 Monterey in 2021, and Apple ended support for the OS in November 2023.

In its release notes for Chrome 139 (expected on July 30), Google does highlight that Apple itself has ended support for Big Sur, so Chrome actually supported the OS for almost two additional years. The company highlights that it is essential that Chrome is run on a supported OS. While Chrome will continue to work on macOS 11 Big Sur, it won't receive any new updates, security patches, or features.

That said, it is interesting to note that Chrome 139 now requires at least macOS 12 Monterey, which already ran out of support almost a year ago. Another interesting observation from the end of support page for macOS 11 Big Sur is that the page hasn't been updated in the past month, so an message on the dedicated page for this removal does mention that "This feature hasn't been verified as accurate since last month , but it is scheduled to ship in 2 weeks."

Regardless, it is important for users to run operating systems that are supported by their respective vendors. Currently supported versions of macOS include macOS 13 Ventura, macOS 14 Sonoma, and macOS 15 Sequoia.
