Microsoft is getting one step closer to releasing Edge 100 to all users. The company has pushed the newest feature update to Edge Insiders in the Beta channel, the final testing stage before public rollout.
After Microsoft decided to update Edge every four weeks instead of six, "major" releases became noticeably thinner with fewer notable changes. Edge 100 is no exception. The release contains only three feature improvements:
- Preview PDF files in Microsoft Outlook and File Explorer. Edge users can open a PDF file in a new lightweight and rich read-only preview. It works with PDF attachments in Outlook Desktop and local PDF files in File Explorer.
- Sync web apps across all desktop devices. Microsoft Edge is now capable of syncing progressive web apps across all your desktop devices (assuming you signed in using a single account and turned on sync).
- Improvements to the Cloud Site List Management experience for IE Mode. Edge now allows configuring session cookie sharing between the main browser and IE Mode in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Microsoft notes that this change is a part of controlled feature rollout, and it will take a while to reach all Edge users.
Another significant change in Edge 100 is a new three-digit user-agent string. Microsoft and other companies have been testing three-digit browser versions for a while to ensure websites work correctly and customers have time to make necessary preparations.
Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers with 100 in the version number most likely will not become a new Y2K bug. Still, developers say that they are ready to roll back user-agent strings to two-digit numbers if the upcoming feature updates unfold global web chaos and break websites across the Internet.
