Attention Outlook users on Windows: did you know that the new Outlook app now demands you have Microsoft Edge installed and running to function? Well, Microsoft has been known for pushing Edge to users in their faces.

This quirky requirement surfaced recently on Reddit, where users encountered an error message stating they needed Edge to use the new Outlook. Further digging revealed the culprit: Microsoft Edge WebView2. This component, embedded within Outlook, seems essential for rendering certain web-based features in the app. It was seen on Reddit.

Although Microsoft’s new Chromium-based Edge browser has received a positive response, many users are unhappy with the sudden Edge dependency. Users have expressed their concerns about forced adoption, limited choice, and the uncertainty of whether this requirement is a temporary bug or a permanent design choice. 

Some users suspect Microsoft is intentionally pushing Edge usage despite its significantly smaller market share than Chrome. This requirement feels restrictive for users who prefer other browsers, potentially hindering their workflow. The lack of clarity adds to the frustration.

So, what can you do? For now, repairing Microsoft Edge might solve the issue for some. 

To do that, open the Control Panel > select Uninstall a program > choose Microsoft Edge > click Change at the top > click the Repair button.
