Adobe Animate is not dead, company reverses action after widespread backlash

Adobe recently announced that it's pulling the plug on the popular 2D animation software, Adobe Animate. A support page stated that new users won't be able to download Adobe Animate starting March 1, 2026. However, Adobe was widely criticized by many creators and professionals who rely on Animate for their work.

A new support page published by Adobe states that Animate will continue to exist and that Adobe has removed all previously announced deadlines. Its previous deadline gave existing users until March 1, 2027, to wrap up and export any projects they had.

Enterprise customers previously had until March 1, 2029, to wind down their Animate workflows, download content, and receive technical support. That said, previous end-of-life emails from Adobe regarding Animate now belong to the trash folder.

For the uninitiated, Adobe Animate is among the oldest animation software programs, with its initial launch dating back 30 years. Animate was originally developed by FutureWave Software in 1996 as FutureSplash Animator and acquired by Macromedia in the same year. It was renamed from Macromedia Flash to Adobe Flash Professional in 2005 and rebranded again in 2015 to Adobe Animate.

The animation software is now available in Maintenance Mode, where Adobe will continue to support Animate with security updates and bug fixes, but users shouldn't expect any new features.

Here's what Adobe stated:

We are not discontinuing or removing access to Adobe Animate. Animate will continue to be available for both current and new customers, and we will ensure you continue to have access to your content. There is no longer a deadline or date by which Animate will no longer be available. These are changes from what we shared in our original email.

Maintenance mode applies to individual, small businesses, and enterprise customers. Adobe has no plans to discontinue maintenance mode and will continue it indefinitely, with no intention to discontinue or remove access. Adobe Animate is currently available through Adobe Creative Cloud Pro.
