Samsung is reportedly dropping OneDrive sync in Galaxy phones

It appears that some bad news is coming to Samsung Galaxy users who back up their photos in Microsoft's OneDrive. A new APK teardown revealed that the South Korean manufacturer plans to end its friendship with OneDrive and switch back to Samsung Cloud.

Android Authority did a teardown of the recent Gallery app update in OneUI 8.5, discovering that Samsung might soon prompt users to leave OneDrive and opt for the company's own cloud. Partnerships similar to that of Samsung and Microsoft never have any guarantees, and the discovered bits prove that a "native" option is usually a safer and more convenient way to go. For example, for iPhone users, backing up photos in iCloud is the easiest option (even though you only get 5GB for free), and Samsung now wants to do the same.

Here are the discovered lines:

• Keep your pictures and videos safe and synced with all your devices.
• Samsung Cloud now lets you back up photos and videos and sync them across your devices. With this change, support for OneDrive will end
• Gallery will no longer support syncing with OneDrive.
• Back up your Gallery to Samsung Cloud to keep your photos and videos safe and synced with all your devices.
• A new way to protect your memories
• Sync with OneDrive ending soon
• Keep your memories safe and synced

Samsung partnered with Microsoft on using OneDrive as a native photo backup option about six years ago. As a result of that partnership, OneDrive sync was integrated into OneUI, allowing users to back up photos without downloading and installing the OneDrive app (which was pre-installed nonetheless). While removing the native integration will be inconvenient for users, you can continue backing up your photos using the OneDrive app from the Google Play Store.
