NewPipe has been updated to version 0.28.0. The latest update adds support for Android Auto integration.
According to the announcement, the feature had been requested by users since 2018. In 2022, haggaie, a contributor began working on the feature. Later on, a member of NewPipe's developer team picked up the work and finished it. NewPipe says that Android Auto support was tested by many users on various cars, before the feature was added to the player.
The open source streaming front-end now lets you listen to music or podcasts from your car's interface. It also supports accessing and playing streams from your history, local playlists and bookmarked playlists. In addition to controlling the player, and the playing queue, you can also use it to search YouTube, or other services supported by the app. NewPipe for Android Auto does not support video. That's understandable, you shouldn't be distracted while driving.
NewPipe 0.28.0 also comes with customizable tabs for the main screen. Go to Settings > Content > Content of main page, and tap on the + button. Choose a channel group and add it to the feed. This will create a new tab on the main page, with a feed that has all the videos from the selected channels. The app now lets you share a local playlist as a YouTube temporary playlist. The download's panel now displays the date when videos were downloaded.
NewPipe's SoundCloud implementation now displays likes in channel and feed, and also adds support for AAC 160k streams.
Download NewPipe from the GitHub page or F-Droid, it's worth noting that the F-droid version has not been updated to v0.28.0. For a full change log, refer to the releases page on NewPipe's GitHub.
NewPipe is working on more features, including a seek chapter title preview in NewPlayer, as well as an updated UI for the audio player.
