Google upgrades Android's migration tool to transfer passwords and eSIM from iPhone

The upgraded Android migration tool now transfers your Google Account, saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and even your eSIM from your iPhone.

Google is using today’s Galaxy Unpacked news cycle to push a more capable way to move from iPhone to Android. The upgraded migration tool now brings over more data types, which should make the switch less annoying for anyone leaving iOS. Samsung’s new foldables are among the first phones getting it, alongside select Pixel devices.

Previously, Android's built-in migration tool covered photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendar data. The updated version adds several new categories on top of that, including your Google Account, saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and even your eSIM.

Here's how the transfer works:

1. Make sure both your new Android phone and your old iPhone are turned on and fully charged, then choose to Set up with an iPhone.
2. A QR code appears on your new Android phone. Scan it using your old iPhone's camera to pair the two devices.
3. Once paired, select which types of data you want to transfer, and keep both phones side by side until the process finishes.
4. After your data transfers, you'll be prompted to move your eSIM over as well. If your old iPhone doesn't have a transferable eSIM, you can download a new one instead or fall back to a physical SIM card. eSIM transfer availability depends on your phone's brand and carrier.
5. Once this process is completed, and the phone you transferred data to boots up, you’ll be prompted to also transfer WhatsApp messages, which happens as part of a separate process.

The upgraded migration feature is rolling out now to select Pixel devices, and it'll also be available on Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8, with support for more Android devices expected soon, although we have no official dates yet.
