Google is working on a notification organizer feature for Android 16. It will automatically arrange notifications on your phone, with the help of AI, of course.

According to a report by Android Authority, Google could introduce this feature as part of the first quarterly release of Android 16. It kind of works similar to how Gmail sorts your inbox into labels. Android will use AI to analyze your notifications and find if they match one of the following categories: Promotions, News, Social, Suggested.

Notifications that consist of sales (discounts), new features, etc., will be placed under Promotions. Top stories, editorials, etc., will be categorized as News. Social as the name suggests is related to social network activity such as likes, posts, and more. The Suggested category will contain notifications from newsletters, recommended media, and things like that.

Android will soon organize your notifications, using AI

This notification organizer is reportedly part of Android 16's source code, but may not be available on all Android 16 devices. It is unclear whether it will be a Pixel-exclusive feature, though the report suggests that it could remain so at least at launch, before expanding to other devices. That may partly be due to the core AI service that analyzes notifications which is contained within the Android System Intelligence app, and this is not part of the open-source version of Android.

Android Authority's Mishaal Rahman says it will be an optional feature, so hopefully we will be able to turn it off. This seems like a rather strange way to manage notifications. I mean, it is possible that a notification could be missed by the user if it is categorized under the wrong section. The screenshot literally shows a warning that says "Bundling is AI-powered and may contain errors".

And what about privacy, does the OS simply identify which app is sending a notification? Let's say that an app sends you news related notifications, but then also sends an alert or reminder about a donation or something. How would Android differentiate the two without analyzing the contents?

Do we really need AI for everything ?
