While the world of the Internet can sometimes be a scary place, there is a day, in February, every year, that promotes a safer and altogether friendlier environment online.

That day is Safer Internet Day (SID) under the European Strategy for Better Internet for Children.

Now in its nineteenth year, there are events planned around the globe that will celebrate what is great about the Internet and the online communities that exist. The theme for the day this year is once again "Together for a better internet". In addition, 2022 has been designated the European Year of Youth, and as such, today will be used to highlight the following:

"the importance of ensuring that the largest possible number of children and young people are adequately prepared to handle digital technologies responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively. Only then can they experience the digital world as a place of knowledge, culture, and opportunities."

Aside from the focus on keeping the youngest users safe online, today also highlights how you as a user of any age can and should protect yourself online with 2-step verification where possible, as with our coverage from earlier today in which Google saw a 50% decrease in compromised accounts.

If you want to take part in the day's activities, you can explore the news and feedback from many of the countries taking part as well as partners. You can even submit your own ideas for activities or events throughout the day. Although it might be a bit late to plan a SID event given the fact that everything kicks off today, you can still get involved by promoting the campaign.

Like last year and the years before it, stakeholders are once again called to action for creating a safer and better internet, especially for its youngest users:

In order to face the societal challenges posed by digitalisation today and tomorrow, we must ensure that the largest possible number of children and young people are adequately prepared to handle digital technologies responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. Only then can they experience the digital world as a place of knowledge, culture and opportunities.

    My guide to safer internet:

    - Leave social sites. Doing so is good for you and everyone.

    - If not, then do not post where you are going beforehand and do not share your photos before you leave the place.

    - Do not take any photos which you do not want to be seen by everyone. If it is on your devices, consider it leaked.

    - Do not share intimate photos with anyone unless you want them to be leaked.

    - Strong passwords do not always mean easy to remember things. If a password is something which is known to others, like a name or number, then it is easy to guess too.

    - As people become veterans, they gain experience called common sense. But kids like to experiment. Kids need to have strong protection in their devices so that their experiments do not lead to them getting hacked easily when they experiment with different things and sites online.

    - Also, strong badware blocking is recommended. Experienced users have fair idea and judgement whether the site is trustable or not. But kids do not know that. Any service that blocks badware prevents kids from opening such sites should be used I think.
