ESS.pngESET Smart Security is a fully integrated security solution and includes antivirus, anti-spyware, a personal firewall and antispam. While some competitive solutions purport to have similar functionality, ESET has developed a unique approach that provides true and full integration of point security solutions. The key advantage of this approach is that individual protection modules are able to communicate together seamlessly, to create unparalleled synergy to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of protection. Moreover, the integrated architecture guarantees optimal utilization of system resources, so ESET Smart Security continues ESET's well know reputation for providing rock solid security in a small footprint that will not slow down an individual's computer.

Excellent release. Just a note, ESET recommends uninstalling previous versions prior to installing this release for some reason.

Important:

Before installing, we recommend uninstalling your current protection (including older versions of ESET software), to ensure a smooth transition.

Beware!

ESET Smart Security 4 does not detect or remove keyloggers!

ESET does not have anti-phishing!

If you are installing this you will definitely need another anti-spyware program like a-squared! ;)

To tell you the truth I don't know how necessary this step is or whether it was also there for previous releases because it is only stated on eset.com, not on eset.eu and so I never knew about it and always installed over the previous versions, lol. The only reason I happen to stumble upon that note was because I visited eset.com to check the changelog since the link on eset.eu was pointing to "new features and improvements" instead of a changelog. Nevertheless I shall take their advice for this release and remove the previous version before upgrading  .

happy upgrading folks!

It detects most keyloggers if you enable detection of potentially unwanted and potentially unsafe apps.

I doubt people get tricked into giving up their bank accounts that easily but incase you do need anti-phishing, IE7 or IE8 has phishing filter, Opendns can block it for your entire LAN. I never looked but other major browsers should have methods to prevent phishing attacks as well. Phishing attacks isn't really something AV programs should be concerned with, users should learn proper internet etiquette before trying to use it, you learn the rules of driving b4 you try to drive a car on the road not so? Same principle applies, you need to practice safe browsing because the strength of a phishing filter depends ultimately on the user conciously refusing to give up his financial information, this is different from a virus attack that tries to steal your data without your knowledge. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the update ;)

And I won't do the reinstalling part because I already upgraded, and don't give balls about downloading and installing it again  The transition was smooth enough for me.

@ Zoo - And yes, NodLogin does work for this one also. Same procedure.

Hmm, ok this is my first time using ESS. I usually use EAV but I wanted to give this ESS a try today. I have a problem that I can't seem to find the solution to. UPnP is broken on my pc now, eMule and uTorrent fail to use UPnP with the ESS firewall. I did some searching around already and went into the IDS and advanced options and enabled an option called "Allow UPNP in the Trusted Zone" however I get the same error in eMule etc.

31/03/2009 11:48:31 PM: UPnP failed to setup port forwardings, please foward those ports manually if necessary!
The ESET firewall is set to automatic, I have no idea what else to try. Any ideas?

LOL, nah I prefer the eset 4.0. I reverted to EAV 4 because I found the configuration of the firewall in ESS 4 to be quite cumbersome. This was after I figured out how to get it working :D. So yea I was determined to figure out how to fix the problem incase other people had the same issue.

Here is the solution if your UPNP is broken after installing ESS 4:

You have to go to the rules and zones configuration window, which I think is accessible from a protection status sub item. I cannot quote the exact names of the places to click at this time because I no longer have it installed but I am sure ESS users will find it easily.

Once there you have to expand the first group of items which is unclassified items or something so. Inside that list down almost to the bottom, you will see 4 rules activly set to block UPNP traffic. You have to disable those 4 rules manually because ticking the box in the IDS options to enable UPNP does not seem to allow UPNP. Personally I didn't like the idea of having to disable rules permanently for UPNP to work, I expected Automatic mode to handle those things. There you have it ladies and gentlemen, now you can get your TVersity to stream to your PS3 once more as well as eMule, uTorrent etc.

PS I think I also found a bug in this release of ESS. I was trying to make a custom rule to allow port 1900 for UPNP to work initially, but if you make a rule with port 1900, as soon as you click save instant crash, lol the gui executable crashes. I didn't try it again but I figure it would happen if I add a custom rule using a port that was already used in another rule so I looked through the list and ended up spotting the 4 rules set to block upnp as described in the previous paragraph. I proceeded to try another firewall but I didn't like it so now I'm using a 3rd one which I like.
