Mozilla, creators of Firefox, announced today that they are forced to delay their up and coming version, Firefox 4. In May, the browser giant announced that the release date for the new version would be next month, although recent circumstances have pushed them to delay the release.

Currently, Firefox 4 is on its sixth beta release and will stay in beta until its first RC release which is said to be in early 2011. The final release is said to follow the RC(s) swiftly after.

Talking to The Register about change to Mozilla development mailing list, Mike Beltzner, headman for Firefox said "Based on the delays in completing the 'feature complete' Beta 7 milestone against which our Add-on developers and third-party software developers can develop, as well as considering the amount of work remaining to prepare Firefox 4 for final release, we have revised our beta and release candidate schedule,".

The Firefox community was said to have been informed about the circumstance and changes to the schedule were based on feedback. The new schedule was released into public domain. With Opera in the process of developing Opera 11, it seems the release of both Firefox 4 and Opera 11 could be released extremely close together.

Nothing new (nor anything to worry about). But it wasn't official till now. It seems that we will have to wait till early November for the Beta 7 as per this page. Sometimes, some softwares do come across a bugs roadblock. It's best when given some time, after all, even the food may get burnt if set at a full flame while cooking.

For those who are really losing patience, the beta and nightlies are said to be quite stable. ;)

I prefer firefox over chrome, but honestly, chrome has such a better release cycle. Plus a cleaner more streamlined UI.

Chrome is just releasing new versions with the name of a "major" version number. Like v6-7-8 instead of 1.6-1.7-1.8.

Firefox 4.0 in 2011, Beta 7, 8, 9 and 10 by the End of 2010

As I told you first at the end of the past week, Firefox 4.0 has been delayed, with Mozilla now confirming officially that users will not be able to download the final version of Firefox 3.6’s successor until the first half of 2011.

The open source browser vendor did not provide any indication as to when it plans to actually ship Firefox 4.0 Final next year, but it is attempting to push it out the door as soon as possible, in early 2011.

With over a month passed since Firefox 4.0 Beta 6 was offered to early adopters, Beta 7 is till cooking, and baking time is not done, at least not for the time being.

Furthermore, Mozilla also increased the number of Beta development milestones that it is looking to deliver to early adopters ahead of the Release Candidate (RC) Build of Firefox 4.0.

Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s Director of Firefox, assured the public that despite the consistent delay it is all business as usual with Firefox 4.0.

“Development on Firefox 4 has not slowed down and strong progress is being made daily. However, based on the delays in completing the "feature complete" Beta 7 milestone against which our Add-on developers and third-party software developers can develop, as well as considering the amount of work remaining to prepare Firefox 4 for final release, we have revised our beta and release candidate schedule,” he explained.

While there have already been six Beta Builds of Firefox 4.0 served to testers, an additional four will be delivered ahead of 2011.

Firefox 4.0 Beta 8 is expected by mid-November, Firefox 4.0 Beta 9 by the end of the coming month, and Firefox 4.0 Beta 10 on December 10th.

In this context, the soonest that Mozilla will be able to wrap up and offer Firefox 4.0 RC is at the start of 2011.

“The frequent beta releases have been extremely helpful in identifying compatibility issues with existing web content, so we plan on continuing to release beta milestones through the end of December,” Beltzner added.

“Our estimate is now that release candidate builds will ship in early 2011, with a final release date close behind. Please note that, as always, this schedule is subject to change based on feedback from users and community members.”

Of course, as it is the case with any development process, Mozilla needs Firefox 4.0 to meet certain quality standards before it is released to end users.

Fact is that testers playing around with Firefox 4.0 Beta 6 as well as subsequent nightly Builds have been complaining about the overall quality of the browser.

And obviously, Mozilla still has quite a few more issues to iron out before it will be able to move ahead to Firefox 4.0 Beta 7, the next three Betas, the RC and then to finalize the browser.

Yes, I want evolution too but I don't want wait too much. I'm waiting since few months for a Firefox evolution.

Everyday I use this slow browser compared to Chrome, Opera and even Safari are much faster. Everyday I loose many time to load my pages so why pay for a fast connection to your ISP every months if the browsers aren't optimized ???

I like FF, I use some extensions...

Just tired of waiting FF 4...

@spootnack:

It's better to wait than to use a rushed / half-baked program ^_^

If you've been testing nightly builds like me for a long time, you'll know what I mean.

@ Bizarre™ :

I tried one time Firefox Beta, I lost all my bookmarks in Firefox stable release...

Now, I'm afraid of Firefox Beta :ph34r:

@spootnack:

Yes and No.

Yes, because you can visit almost any website without trouble.

No, because you have to be prepared to lose some plug-ins.

That's so true.

I remember when GTA 4 got delayed. (Every single time)

But afterwards.. I'm happy they delayed it. Perfecting something just takes time and the results just improve :)
