OneDrive for Android is getting support for Samsung Motion Photos and 8K video playback

Today, Microsoft announced some updates to its OneDrive app on Android. One is that there's an all-new home screen experience. You're going to see three sections on the new home screen: recent files, offline files, and "On this Day" photos. For those using a work or school account, you'll instead see recent files, shared libraries, and offline files. This new experience is already available on iOS.

Next up is Samsung Motion Photos, which are now supported for both storage and playback. You might recall that it was just last month that Live Photos support arrived on iOS, so now it's a similar update for Samsung devices. Right now, editing Samsung Motion Photos isn't supported, so if you make any changes, they will be saved as a still photo.

The next and final new feature listed is that you can now play Samsung 8K videos from within OneDrive. Interestingly, Microsoft noted that it's just 8K videos that were taken with a Samsung Galaxy S20 or S21 devices; however, it didn't say why playback would be limited to 8K videos taken with those phones. 8K video capture wasn't something that was exclusive to Samsung phones, as it was enabled by the Snapdragon 865 chipset.

The new home screen will show up on OneDrive 6.21 and above, and Motion Photos will be supported by version 6.23 and above. Microsoft didn't say what version is needed for 8K video playback.
