Brower maker launches Opera Devices 10.15 SDKs and Opera Devices 10 browser

Opera has announced the launch of a series of new products at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, designed to extend web browsing capabilities beyond the desktop to connected devices such as TVs and tablet PCs.

The products include two new Software Developments Kits (SDKs) for Linux and Windows CE platforms called Opera Devices 10.15, and a new standalone browser for Windows CE in beta, Opera Devices 10.

The Opera Devices SDKs are built on the same engine as the company's flagship browsers for desktop computers and mobile phones, offering browsing capabilities and tools such as user interfaces and application environments to be deployed on TVs, set-top boxes, portable media players, tablets and mobile devices, said the firm.

The SDKs have been developed to allow users to create and build a full web browser, and/or create a modular platform dedicated to web-based content, services or widgets.

Both kits feature a number of key technologies including Flash Lite 3.1, HTML5 and CSS3 to allow offline browsing, as well as the ability to use the Opera Widget engine and APIs to make devices W3C compliant for widgets.

The SDK for Linux also boasts hardware acceleration and Open IPTV Framework for the development of Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV and Open IPTV Forum clients.

The Opera Devices 10 web browser, meanwhile, is based on the same user interface recently released for Opera Mobile and Opera Mini as part of the company's move to unify its browser products.

The browser includes portrait/landscape mode, URL auto-completion, touch screen browsing, visual tabs as well as Opera's Speed Dial shortcuts to pre-selected internet content, said the firm.

Dag Olav Norem, vice president of products for Opera, said the new launches had been designed to meet the demand from different segments of the market for a browser application and engine that could be tailored for various end uses.

"The new features we've added to the new SDK products allows customers to use the browser and tools provided to develop software for a range of devices, from TVs to UIs for mobiles," he said.
