The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confiscated 58 uncertified communication devices in a series of raids around the country.

In a statement, it said the haul was the result of a joint-operation with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), with raids in 12 locations in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Perak and Pulau Pinang between July and October.

In a press statement, MCMC stated the seized devices include antennas, signal boosters and repeaters, wireless TV transmitters, AV transmitters, Android TV boxes, walkie talkies and RF repeaters.

The cases are being investigated under Rule 16 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000, which carries a jail term of up to six months, a fine of up to RM100,000, or both.

MCMC said it is taking a hardline against the possession and sale of uncertified communication devices, having tackled 19 cases involving 66 charges up to September this year, issuing RM432,000 in fines in total.

This is up from RM55,500 in fines from 10 cases involving 15 charges for the entire of last year.

“Efforts to crackdown on the use or sales of uncertified communication devices will be ramped up by the MCMC. This means more people involved with these devices will be facing justice, ” it stated.

The regulatory body encouraged members of the public to report such activities to the authorities and to only buy communication devices that display the MCMC label.

Consumers can use the Check Your Label app on Google Play or Apple App Store to verify if their device is certified.
