11 Percent of Windows XP Users Will Switch to Linux, Survey Claims

11% of organisations using Windows XP plan to switch to Linux soon, a survey conducted by Tech Pro Research shows

From OMG! Ubuntu:

The research group asked organisations still using Windows XP about their plans post-April, when Microsoft ceases providing official support and security fixes for the 11-year old OS.

11% of the (admittedly small) 641 companies queried stated they intend to switch to Linux. The low-cost, robust security and growing reputation in enterprise use are likely key factors informing such plans.

Perhaps more shockingly is that 37% of those asked intend to stick with Windows XP past the expiry date.

I wish them good luck with searching all drivers.. ^_^

Not really, you'll be surprised about the compatibility. I never had trouble with it.

On my laptop Ubuntu finds and installs all the drivers, Windows 7 doesn't! -_-

Do you

I wish them good luck with searching all drivers.. ^_^

It's not really a problem. Some drivers are written in linux. And most linux drivers can be extracted from windows drivers. And the software center which is the built-in site for linux drivers are updated all the time.

yea after those 11% who will actually run linux for 12 hours 98% of them will pirate windows 7...linux is great for the hard core people that really and truly know computers inside and out and how to make everything work when things go wrong

... use piece of shit LibreOffice?

Kingsoft is developing Linux edition, MS Office can be installed on Linux (in multiple ways), and don't forget Cloud Office apps.

Except OpenOffice and LibreOffice there are many many similar software that target users specific needs.

As for Linux drivers, it's not OS makers that create drivers but the hardware makers.

Of course, standardization of hardware is reason why OS almost always is able to properly interpret hardware such as DVD, HDD, etc.

If you create unusual hardware you are obligated to write driver in order for OS to interpret your hardware properly,

and since for many years Windows has been dominating OS world, it is very intuitive that hardware makers create drivers almost exclusively for Windows.

In last few years many organizations around the globe, as well as government and law enforcement agencies have switched to Linux based OS, hence there is drastic increase in availability of Linux drivers, for example few years ago you couldn't find a printer with driver for Linux, whereas today things have changed.

I agree, there is a learning curve and people usually hate to learn something new, however, with robustness of Linux you can skip the learning curve by giving people the same feel, and the same mouse actions as previous OS.

Transparency, diversity of distributions and desktop environments, as well as, if configured well, lack of performance and stability issues, makes Linux the only true alternative. Hence, for those who do not want to be slaves of decisions made in Redmond or Washington, for those who want the choice to inspect a code before using it, for those who want transparency and freedom of choice, and for those who want control over personal information and privacy Linux seems to be the only choice, in my humble opinion.

This is not pro Linux talk, Linux has its own shortcoming, and I always suggest using both, whether trough multi boot or virtual machine.

On the other hand from standpoint of organizations it's easier to test small group of employees and draw conclusions based on the results.

The only reason i am still using W7 instead of primarily Linux is that i am giving MS a chance to redeem themselves (plus it's still quite nice and at this point i am trying to hold off on getting a new machine, because that will have Linux), however it seems likely that i will be giving up on Windows. Though it's great that the 11% will move to Linux that's probably barely going to make Linux user share rise. Maybe 1 to 2% at the most, we will see but MS has many users upset over W8x so we will see how many people are determined enough to stick with Linux. I think some might dual boot XP with a Linux distro.

there is no reason not to upgrade to at least Win7...runs everything XP does and quite better actually.

I was way late to the Win7 party, but since making the switch I havent had the desire to go back to XP.

although i still have a backup hard drive for my laptop still with XP on it as it was the day i took it out,

and formatted another one for the original Win7 backup cd that came with my laptop,

havent had any desire to put that drive back in my laptop, and go back to XP .

and Linux.....lol nope.

There is nothing wrong with Win 8 if you only use it for web browsing and emails. Try to use it for work. Your first issue may be installing the software of your trade. I have 2 WIn 8 machines, 1 tablet and one HTPC... and my main PC runs Win 7. Win 8 is best suited for tablets and entertainment systems.

11%? I'd have to call the methodology of this one into question.

On the other hand, I find the 37% keep using XP easy to believe and am surprised it's not higher. If an organization really needed to move, they already have done so. Home users just don't care that much how it works. Then there's the 90% that don't want the Win8 GUI no matter what - especially business users despite it being technically superior or at least an evolution in the M$FT O/S.

Microsoft has been dead to me ever since Vista. April 2014 is NOT the date I see on their tombstone (but much earlier).

Windows XP feels like programmed in C and assembler, while Vista and later made from managed code (.NET)...

lol it's funny how people assume that your technologically inept if you don't use W8x. I don't use it or want it because i don't like it. The fact i myself would rather use Linux means i am technology adept. It seems that the 11% just don't like W8. If you can figure out how to use Linux there should be no problem in learning W8. However, there really is no point in learning something that you are not going to like, let alone pay for it. And last time i checked W8 is not free, well unless you pirate it.

People who say things like that are those who didn't own a PC until Windows 8. They have nothing to compare with. Hahaha,

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Or they moved to smartphones and they think the flashy tiles are the future for even desktop PCs. Despite W8x not being 'that bad' a good portion of users are upset, frustrated and some are just ignoring W8 all together. If MS want's users to upgrade to their latest OS, they are going to have to give users what they want.
