Windows-Still-Powering-91-78-of-Computer

Microsoft’s new strategy of remaining completely tight-lipped on the sales performance of its latest products made many analysts and experts around the world criticize the company and some of its high-profile execs, including CEO Steve Ballmer.

Some have even claimed that the poor uptake of products such as Windows 8 and Microsoft’s slow reaction in the smartphone and mobile phone markets might affect the tech giant’s dominance in the operating system department, especially because both Android and iOS are gaining thousands of new users every month.

But a new round of statistics provided by market researcher Net Applications comes to put things straight and to show everyone that Microsoft’s supremacy in the OS world isn’t going to end anytime soon.

Windows is currently installed on 91.78 percent of computers worldwide, despite Windows 8’s failure to make a name for itself and despite Microsoft’s efforts to kill Windows XP.

Truth is, Microsoft has indeed lost approximately 1 percent of the OS market in 11 months, as it had a share of 92.53 percent in May 2012, but things are still good enough for the Redmondians.

What’s more, the company is already working on several new products, including a major refresh for Windows 8 that’s expected to pack a long list of improvements, as well as a new browser and plenty of UI customization options.

In addition, the Softies have clearly explained that they’re now willing to pay more focus to customer feedback, hinting that a Start button might be brought back in Windows as soon as this summer.

Word is that Microsoft has already started development of Windows 9, the next full Windows release which, according to some sources familiar with the matter, is projected to see daylight in November 2014.

Still no official confirmation on Windows 8.1 and Windows 9, but expect more details to surface in the next couple of months.

91.78% of all computers rub windows.... not bad for a so called crappy company that makes crappy stuff... that kinda dispells that urban myth... ipads ipod and iphones..are toys to play with but damn they are so good that no body out there has come close to making anything close to what these things can do...they will not take my apple products away from me or get me to buy any of the other ipod/ipad impersonators or wanna be's

i really do not think that microsoft will ever be known for smart phones or tablets...the market is owned by too many others and waht microsoft and offered so far has fallen so short, it is joke...when you have almost every iphone/ipad owner waiting to stand in line to buy a new model when they come out you are not going to crack that market easily... again business application smart phone owners do not feel the need to get a new phone every 15 minutes mostly because they do not the bells and whistles and all the hype to do business on their phones...do not know too many people out there that use an iphone for work...and if they do they wish they had a blackberry for work( those that actually use a smart phone for work and cannot do their job with out it do tend to choose iphone as the tool to use)

This doesn't really mean anything, yet anyway. Considering some users won't budge from XP despite it's ending it will be interesting to see what will happen during XP's final days, what will users do then?

Eventually when Windows 7 reaches it's end support date i'll have to decide what to go with. For now i am sticking with 7 because it works. Eventually i might go with Linux or Apple despite MS's claim of restoring the start menu, i still think it's a bit short sighted considering the major changes they already have done and people have overlooked, like the 1 disk 1 system & now they plan on releasing a new OS every year, possibly will start having less life span cycles. I had Win 98 for a good 7 years, XP 10 years and so far with Win 7 4-5 years (expected another 7 years), Vista i only used it for 2 years until Win 7 came out.

I do enjoy checking out the new OS's, but with Win 8 that changes, and even 8.1 doesn't look a whole lot better (i might have gotten Win 8 if the UI wasn't so different, even if it wasn't just the start menu change.. the entire UI changed overall, minus the familiar desktop). Either way depending on what MS plans on doing for the future might change that number.

Not sure what's surprising about it. Did the editor expect MacOS to have 91% marketshare? :huh:

Either way, you guys see it as 91% of Windows, I see it as 0.7% lost since last year and atleast 2% lost since last 2 years. What's important to see is, how does it do now, whether it keeps like this or loses further.

for any leader in the market be it microsoft or apple which rightfully has lost a lot to samsung recently which no one predicted earlier prior to the iphone5 release; every great leader cannot continue staying at a certain peak; they will have their ups and downs so to expect MS to ride at 100% is extremely not making sense; if I forget everything that is often debated on Ms on this forum;

let's not forget the giant that is affecting almost every commodity in the world today and not only on software of computers and that is China; another day I read an article how China which has almost half the world population is working on a new OS platform to be installed across it's nation and will block everything to do with MS, apple or any US product of software - I will try to find this article to share it; if this happens; it's a crises to the world with respect to the creatively and innovation of the chinese which I respect;

I bought what you call a fake samsung S3 from china last year for 100 US dollars and trust me it's better than the original; let's calculate how many tablets, or mobiles is owned by chinese individuals running OS that is not even recognized to us in our part of the world; how much of this is taking off great leaders such as MS, apple and others!

Thing is, Microsoft has been around 90-92% from around a decade now, so I don't see any surprise. And we are only talking about PCs here, as in, Apple never made an major mark on modern day PCs, Linux is struggling but only now it's expected to take off just little, however, I don't see any other OS coming in the PC market, so no surprise that MS will keep dominating the market for atleast next 10 years.

Yes, China is going to make homegrown Ubuntu version, which I for one am happy about - will give Microsoft a good competition and competition means better products from all the sides.

LOL I bet they did expect Mac to have a high % marketshare... big el wrongo mistake that was!

Windows has been powering most computers since the early Windows 3.0 and earlier times!

too bad steve jobs would not allow anyone else to clone apple OS... microsft might have been a flash in the pan id Apple allowed clones... bill gates knew how to market to get that huge lions share..but then that is allso why windows has had so many issues and virus attacks and spyware issues and all that other bad stuff

Virus Attacks,Spware is Common Dude ,Think in different point of view .is linux is sceure ?no ,not at all ..but is assumed as secure becasue only ( 2-3 % ) people using linux desktop os!!especially in network server!! that what the reason linux is not vulnerable more.....................but in case of windows os about 91% people using it.....so hackers,carcker,patcher want to thieve all,so they choose windows more than linux..................that the reson ...think more deeply you will get it..what iam trying to say.......

This, and the fact that Windows 8 has only been on the market for about 6 months. Wait until XP loses support and we will see what users will go to or whether they will really stay with what they have. I just hope they are prepared to move to whatever works for them and not the 'latest MS OS' (being probably Win 8.1) without seeing whether or not it's infact a good OS.

It's not surprising that MS still carries most of the market considering there really isn't that much competition. Most PC vendors simply go with MS i think a few of them though managed to put some Win 7 machines on the market.
