3DMark released for Android

Futuremark has now released a free version of its 3DMark hardware and graphics benchmarking tool for Android-based smartphone and tablets, after previously releasing a version for Windows PCs.

In early February, developer Futuremark released the latest version of its 3DMark PC hardware and graphics benchmarking tool for Windows 8, 7 and Vista-based PCs. Today, the company launched a version of 3DMark that has been made to benchmark Android-based smartphones and tablets.

The free release on Google Play is compatible with over 1,000 Android devices. Futuremark worked with a number of Android-based hardware companies to help develop this version of the software, including Broadcom, Imagination Technologies, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm. The software has two specific benchmarking tests; Ice Storm, which has both a graphics and a physics benchmark, and Ice Storm Extreme, designed to be run on higher end Android smartphones and tablets with 1080p resolution, along with higher quality textures and post-processing effects.

Both versions of Ice Store are based on OpenGL ES 2.0. Ice Store Extreme will be included in a free update to the Windows version in the near future, which will allow users to compare benchmarking results between the two operating systems.

Futuremark still plans to release versions of 3DMark for Windows RT and Apple's iOS devices but a specific launch date has yet to be announced. Futuremark is promising that those versions will allow comparisons with their Windows and Android counterparts.
