McAfee: Windows 8 attacks will see "rapid development" in 2013

In its annual predictions of new PC and malware threats, McAfee says that it sees a "rapid development" of attacks centered on Windows 8 in 2013, along with other threats.

While we have been reporting on the antics of its founder, John McAfee, in recent weeks, some might forget that the company he formed is still one of the biggest names in the antivirus industry. Today, McAfee (the company now owned by Intel) released its annual report that tries to predict the threats that will show up in terms of malware and other online attacks in the next 12 months.

The report, in PDF format, predicts that in 2013 we will see "rapid development of ways to attack Windows 8". While McAfee does say that Windows 8 is more secure than other versions of Windows released in the past, that doesn't mean malware creators and hackers can't go after it. It states:

Now that the underground market for attack and malware kits is much more competitive than three years ago, it is likely that Windows 8–specific malware will be available quicker than Windows 7–specific malware appeared.

The report also points out that attacks go after users more often than the OS. Therefore, people who use any version of Windows should keep an eye out to avoid phishing scams that can serve as a way into a Windows 8 PC if the person opens the door to such a scam.

Today's report from McAfee goes over a host of other threats it predicts will be a problem for the PC and Internet industries in 2013, including threats that could come from HTML5-based websites and apps. The report states, "We’re certain that attackers will turn their attention to finding holes in HTML5 security in 2013. The question is how quickly they’ll succeed."

It will be so very easy for people to hack Windows 8 especially since there are so many backdoors in it already built in curtousy of the United States government. All a well trained hacker has to do is find those backdoors, hijack them, take controle. The worst part is that the nature of the backdoors are MEANT to be stealthy and so an attacker could currently aleady be attacking millions of Windows 8 PC's; stealing all information and even turning on the cam and watching you. Reality TV never was so real!

I feel so very sorry for Windows 8 users. My friend got a Windows 8 laptop for Christmas. To me it's a pile of steaming shit. It can't downgrade from what I have seen, I was going to go down to windows 7 but it REFUSED to do so. I set it to boot from disk first but it refused to boot with Windows 7 disk. It even refused to boot Hirens Boot CD. Yeah, I hate Windows 8 so far.

It is (that I know of) the first OS that is not Premium because it can't downgrade, is missing many features, stripped of privacy, not made to fit the needs, demands, wants of the people who in many cases are FORCED to buy Windows 8. Just got back from Wal-Mart (it's a mega store here in the United States in case you don't have them where you live) and ALL of the computer for sell....were Windows 8 ONLY. They took down off the shelves all of the working Windows 7 computer in exchange for utter garbage. This operating system is not tailored for the tech savy, it's designed for those who like "bells and whistles and ribbons".

To be honst...It's less flashy than Windows 7. It feels so rugged, startups don't appear to be faster. The update proccess is attrocious and slower than hell; I have to hard shut down just to make the OS work right after every update. Overall, yes I have a hatred for Windows 8 much like the rebels had a hatred for Darth Vadar and the Empire. I am not pleased or happy with it and I refuse to buy it.

Im a gamer and until Linux can smoothly play all the games I play on my computer, I litterally CAN'T go to Linux otherwise I'd do it in a heartbeat.

It's quite evident that you're not compatible with Windows 8.

Edit:

That was quite pathetic - I think you've got sufficient cause to sue Bill Gates for this humiliation meted out. :(

Unfortunately, your friend would've seen through you, too - before we all did. I'm afraid it's time for some of us to get back to basics and hone our own computing proficiency. Commenting on something that one has never even used is like exposing one's gonads in full public view - it cuts a sorry figure.

We are :pirate: :pirate: damn it - supposed to be the pinnacle of software programs. Let's stop being a Whiner - you're a Winner.

We :pirate: :pirate: don't allow Bill Gates (or anyone else) to dictate terms now, do we?

Not necessarily. Users aren't picking Windows 8 a lot, which, some may stick to Windows 7 and some may try Linux. Now, more users for linux will mean more progress. In addition to that, Gabe Newell is trying his best too.
