  2. Encrypted chat service Cryptocat has spent the past two years blocking outsiders from reading private conversations, and now it's facing a block of its own trying to get onto Apple's App Store. Developer Nadim Kobeissi took to Twitter today to blast the iPhone and iPad maker for unjustly rejecting Cryptocat for iPhone, software that was announced earlier this month. Kobeissi says he's under a non-disclosure agreement as part of the Apple developer program and cannot go into specifics, but claims that the reasons the company gave for its rejection were "illegitimate," and could threaten similar apps. "One of the reasons for Cryptocat for iPhone's rejection by Apple strongly implies that any other encrypted group chat app can be rejected," Kobeissi said in a follow-up tweet. Cryptocat made waves for offering a simple way to let two people chat while using end-to-end encryption. The service gained international attention (and some notoriety) in light of government eavesdropping, and its use in countries where free speech was limited. That's come with some costs: Kobeissi says he's gone through extra security screenings when traveling; and fearing intrusion from the Canadian government earlier this year, he moved Cryptocat's entire network to a Swedish nuclear bunker. One thing that makes all this curious is that Cryptocat's already available on Apple's App Store for OS X, which has similar content guideline requirements. Developers need to meet those rules before software can be distributed to users, though unlike on desktop machines, Apple does not allow users to buy or install software from elsewhere on iOS. Apple did not respond to a request for comment on the rejection, which Kobeissi says he might legally challenge. Source
  3. Apple today released an 8GB version of the iPhone 5c. This new variation of the device is competely identical with the 16GB and the 32GB versions of the smartphone, except for the obvious difference in the internal storage space. The device is already listed in some of Apple's online stores across the globe. The latest addition to the iPhone 5c family is also available with most of the major mobile carriers in Europe. For example, O2, the second largest carrier in the UK, offers the iPhone 5c with several conracts. These start from $21.63 (£13) with an upfront cost of $682 (£409.99), but you can also opt to get Apple's "affordable" device for $71 (£43) a month with no upfront payment. As a comparison, O2 has put a $782 (£469.99) price tag on the 16GB version of the iPhone 5c off contract, whereas the older iPhone 4s will set you back $598.95 (£359.99). SFR, another carrier that already offers the just-released iPhone 5c 8GB, will let you get the Apple-branded smartphone off contract for as much as $834.47 (EUR599). You can also claim the device for $41.78 (EUR 29.99) a month with a contract. Apple's move most probably aims to boost up the sales of the iPhone 5c, which is everything but a bestseller device, because consumers usually opt for the slightly more expensive, but more premium iPhone 5s. We already told you that the Cupertino company purportedly stockpiled at least 3 million units of the iPhone 5c, 2 million of which stashed at Pegatron, one of Apple's contract manufacturers. We are expecting the iPhone 5c 8GB to hit all of Apple's online stores pretty soon. The price of the device in the USA will probably be around the $500 mark for the unlocked version. Would you consider getting one? Source
  4. According to performance monitoring by Crittercism, a mobile solutions firm, the freshly-released iOS 7.1 has a crash rate of only 1.6%. This is the best stability achievement in iOS's recent history, with versions from 6 to 7 having crashes of above 2%. For example, iOS 7.0.4 had an app crash rate of 2.1%, which means that either testing went over really well, or Apple has done an impressive work of optimizing the latest installment of iOS. Reportedly, a significant number of iOS 6 users who hesitated to upgrade to iOS 7 have now switched to version 7.1. Also notable is how quickly the update was adopted. Ad network and analysis agency Chitika claims that 12% of the devices that accessed its ads were running iOS 7.1 about 45 hours after its release. That's all fine and dandy, but Apple customers have been complaining of poor battery life, drops in connectivity, and random reboots since installing the update. Other users, meanwhile, have been enjoying their iDevices as usual. Either way, Apple has not yet commented on the situation. Source
  5. Apple may be trying to compete with phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note III if a new rumor that the iPhone 6 will have two different screen size options is accurate. The Japanese newspaper Nikkei has reported that Apple suppliers in East Asia have already started to manufacture sensors and display ports for this new addition to the Apple family, which could be released as soon as September. Nikkei's report claims the phone will likely be released in 4.7- and 5.5-inch variants, which would both be noticeably larger than the current iPhone's 4-inch screen. Many have speculated that, because of the battle of screen sizes, Apple might be creating a new iPhone with a screen larger than 5 inches, although a well-connected analyst by the name of Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities says otherwise. Kuo, an accurate source of similar information in the past, claims that Apple won’t actually increase the size of the iPhone’s screen, but instead Apple is continuing its focus on making product that can be easily used with one hand. Although the new iPhone’s screen won’t be bigger, Kuo claims that the screens resolution will be “significantly higher” than the current Retina Display's of 326 PPI. Many companies, such as Sharp, Japan Display and LG, are expected to take part in producing the iPhone 6’s Retina Display. Along with rumors such as a higher resolution Retina Display, the new iPhone is rumored to have a sapphire-coated display, reduced bezel design (such as the Galaxy S4), along with other far-fetched rumors, though little concrete evidence has been provided. 8. Google has released a major update to the iOS version of the Hangouts mobile app. Whereas the previous app left a lot to be desired and didn’t look or work as you’d expect from an app on iOS, the updated version completely changes that and also adds some new features. One of the most noticeable changes in the new version is the new UI redesigned for iOS 7. The conversation list view is different and you’ll see your profile right up top. Click on it and you’ll get options related to your profile, such as account settings and snooze settings. The chat list looks different and you can now swipe on an item in the list and get options to favorite, video call the contact, mute or archive the conversation. All of this works with silky smooth fancy new transition animations. The chat view is different, too, and much classier than before. There is now an attachment button next to the text box that lets you add an image, location (previously available on Android but now on iOS as well) and a new addition, stickers. Yes, Hangouts finally gets support for stickers and the iOS app is the first one to have them. This feature is not yet available on Android app or the Chrome extension, although you can still view them since they are simply animated GIFs. The stickers in question are just animated versions of the Hangouts/Android KitKat emoji. The iPad version gets the bulk of the UI changes with a new split screen mode that makes better use of the larger screen. The previous Hangouts app would just fill the whole screen and looked like a stretched mobile app but the new one splits the screen into conversation list on the left and chats on the right. If you go landscape you’ll also see a video call button on the right. To start a video call, simple drag the button across the screen towards the left. The iPad app also gets picture-in-picture video calling, the way you do on desktop Hangouts. Lastly, there is also a new ten-second video clip feature, that lets you record and send ten-second clips to your contacts instead of doing the whole video call thing. The new Hangouts app for iOS is finally a legit app that offers the quality that you expect from an app on iOS, with a high level of polish and good design decisions. It’s out on the App Store now and if you use Hangouts you should definitely update to it immediately. -|Download Link|-App Store Source
  9. Just two days ago Microsoft announced a new trade-in deal for the US and Canada, which can give you up to $250 of store credit if you give up on your old smartphone or tablet. Today Microsoft has extended this deal with a special offer. If you opt to return your old Apple iPhone 4, iPhone 4S or Samsung Galaxy S II, you can have a Lumia 1020 or Lumia 1520 for free. Your old phone just needs to be working, with no missing parts or pieces. The deal expires on March 2, or until supplies last. he catch is that you'll have to sign a two-year contract with AT&T, to get the free Lumia unit. Lumia 1520 otherwise costs $200 on contract, while the Lumia 1020 has already dropped down to just $100 on a contract. Anyway, if you want to trade in your old gadget for a new Windows-based one, feel free to explore all deals throughout the US and Canada before making a decision. Source
  10. Nowadays, saying ‘apple’ would bring associations with a tech company rather than a fruit, and things like iPod, iPhone and iPad are household names, but did you know that there is a hidden meaning behind the ‘i’, a meaning that was embedded in it when Apple launched its first iProduct? It all starts around 1997 when Steve Jobs made his return to Apple from NeXT Computers with a grand vision and with a company 6 months short of going bankrupt. Groups of Apple employees have formed, each one blaming others for the demise of the company, and Cupertino was practically all in shambles. Jobs spent the first few months cutting down on products and employees, and trying to regain focus. What remained were two product lines - the PowerPC and the Mac family, and it was time take a bet and put all chips on the table on one of these. It was the Mac family, with a plan for the first computer to ship with a new for the time Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector, and the first to shockingly skip the 3.5-inch floppy drive. This visionary approach to features will later become an Apple trademark. One more thing - Jobs had a radically different vision for its looks and design - it was not to be disassembled and upgradable (that was a stark difference from the vision of core Apple engineers like Wozniak), it was translucent and came in a fascinating array of vivid colors. It was like nothing else in the market, and right in its center was a CD-Rom drive. "We're betting the company on this computer," said Steve. "It needs a great name." As always, Jobs took the creative lead, thinking up names and he eventually came up with the name MacMan. Luckily, he was not the only one involved in the process. Ken Segall came to Apple directly from NeXT, with Steve Jobs, and he and his team were shocked when hearing the name. It must have taken a lot of convincing, but finally Steve agreed with his Apple co-workers to settle on a different name: iMac. "It's a full-powered Mac, so it can do a lot of things. But first and foremost, it will get you onto the Internet in 10 minutes, even if you've never used a computer before." And that’s where the ‘i’ in all succeeding Apple products comes from: ‘i’ for the Internet, the most important new feature of the iMac. The presentation board, however, liked the name for more than just that. The name was spot on - it was simple, it was obvious, it fit in the ‘Think Different’ Apple ideas. To them, it also stood for other things, things of different value like individual and imagination. These are the core Apple values built in the names of the current iPod, iPhone and iPad. We might also see an iWatch, and many other iDevices, but the values behind those products seem to remain a priority for Apple, don’t you think? Source
  11. iOS 7.1, the first major update since the seventh edition of Apple’s mobile firmware first landed in September, has already clocked up five betas, and although we haven’t really heard anything indicative of the eventual release date, it is widely assumed the that the GM and subsequent end-user roll-out isn’t too far off. Now, though, 9to5Mac has come through with something a bit more concrete, citing “reliable sources” in claiming that iOS 7.1 will drop next month. The tipster is also said to have noted that there are to be no hidden or secret new features forthcoming, and that what we’ve seen so far through the betas is pretty much what we’re going to be getting once the cycle is complete. We already know that iOS in the Car is going to be a big part of iOS 7.1, with app developer Steve Troughton-Smith having carried out some extensive research over the past few weeks and walked us through a few details. There seems to be a great deal of support from production car manufacturers for iOS in the Car , and although it remains to be seen whether the improvements to the likes of Apple Maps and Siri will pay dividends for the upcoming implementation, it will certainly be the flagship feature of iOS 7.1. The update will also include some rudimentary tweaks and alterations to the UI, although as per the betas hitherto, we’re going to be seeing a few minor-touch ups rather than any radical changes. As ever, there will be the usual spate of bug fixes and performance enhancements, making for a smoother and more secure overall experience. After all, it was only yesterday that details emerged of a flaw in iOS 7 allowing Find My iPhone to be switched off without a password, but since this appears to have been subsequently cleared up through the iOS 7.1 beta stream, it’s almost certain that said issue will be no more once the firmware is ready for prime time use. It’s always nice to hope for a little surprise feature or two, but unfortunately, this likely won’t be the case for iOS 7.1. Nevertheless, it looks to be a matter of weeks away now, and as soon as it’s made available, we’ll have the details right here; so stay tuned! Source

  14. As you have probably noticed from the news over the past few hours, today was a big day for Apple patents. Apple apparently had about 30 patents approved, although only a few of them are targeted enough to the mobile sphere to make us interested. We've seen mobile camera lens patents and now we're seeing another patent that points to work on an "iPen" stylus. This isn't the first "iPen" patent gathered by Apple, and it is unlikely to be the last either. According to Patently Apple, the Cupertino crew has more than 20 patents that could all be part of an Apple stylus, including LiveScribe-like recording, variable pressure and texture input, gesture controls, and more. The newest patent granted today allows for determining the orientation of the stylus through a sensor in the pen as well as a sensor in the slate. There could be a number of cool uses for a feature like this from something simple like making the device feel more like various drawing materials, for example a pencil (one end for writing and the other for erasing), or a charcoal stick (using the side for a broad shadows), to more advanced functionality like putting the stylus into power-saving mode depending on the orientation. This patent was filed in 2011, but it seems fairly obvious that Apple is still putting time and effort into figuring out how to make a stylus that is more than just a "dumb stick", which was why Steve Jobs wanted to avoid it in the first place. It just remains to be seen if Apple will actually build the device and sell it. It seems more likely with the rumored 12.9-inch iPad in the works, but we'll have to see. Source
  15. The next round of Apple devices isn't expected to hit the market until September, but that means Apple has to finish up designing the chip and sorting out the orders for the companies that will produce and package the chips. A new report makes it sound like Apple may be attempting to bring the upcoming A8 closer to being a true "system-on-a-chip" (SoC). The A7 SoC included the CPU, GPU, cache, image processor, and "secure enclave" to store TouchID data, and moved the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass processing to the M7 motion coprocessor. Presumably, there will be an M8 motion coprocessor, but word has it that in addition to everything you'd find on the A7, the A8 will also include the DRAM for the device. The same report from DigiTimes says that Apple has chosen Amkor Technology and STATS ChipPAC to each package 40% of the A8 orders with Advanced Semiconductor Engineering taking the last 20% of the packaging orders. Interestingly, the report closes by saying that "TSMC reportedly will start ramping up production using 20nm process technology for Apple's A8 chip in the second quarter of 2014." The interesting thing there is that the wording doesn't say that the A8 will begin production in Q2, but that TSMC will ramp up production using the same 20nm process. That could just be odd wording from DigiTimes, because it would make sense that the A8 ramps up production in Q2 so the devices can be built in time for a late Q3 release. Source
  16. Apples iPhone 5s can certainly hold its own against most of the competition out there when it comes to camera quality, but Nokias Windows Phone-powered Lumia 1020 is the undisputed king of camera phones. We couldnt believe how impressive the 1020′s camera was when we reviewed the handset last summer, especially in low light. It has now been nearly six months since we first tested the phone and there still isnt anything else on the market that even approaches the Lumia 1020. One expert recently decided to pit the 1020 and Apples iPhone 5s against several DSLR cameras to see how far mobile cameras have come. In doing so, he also obviously compared the two devices themselves. DPReviews Dean Holland pitted the Lumia 1020 and iPhone 5s against five different DSLR models and one film SLR. Each of the DSLR models represented the best of the best for under $2,000 in the year it was released, with the oldest model having launched in 2003 and the most recent having debuted in 2012. Beyond being among the best in the business, theres another good reason Holland choses these two smartphones to test. They couldnt be more different, he wrote. The iPhone 5S worships at the alter [sic] of convenience and speed, while the Nokia devotes everything to the best possible image quality. In the 7 seconds you took to read this paragraph, the iPhone could have taken 70 shots. The Nokia? Two. With another coming wait a moment almost there now. Their camera apps are polar opposites too: the Nokia offers you full-time manual control over all the camera settings; the iPhone gives you almost none. Spoiler alert: Photos captured by newer DSLR cameras were found to be far better than those taken by either smartphone. Obviously. Holland took a smart approach to this challenge, though. By using DSLRs that span nearly a decade, hes able to determine where modern smartphone cameras are in relation to DSLR historically. This leads us to what is perhaps the most interesting conclusion: Gun to head time to come up with a number, Holland wrote. How many years are smartphones behind the best $2,000 DSLRs? Comparing detail resolved, Ill say the iPhone 5S currently sits 8-9 years behind the DLSRs in bright light, while the Nokia trails by less than 6 years probably nearer to 3. This is even when you allow the DSLRs the luxury of a $1,700 lens, and shooting in raw. In bright light, the Nokia came close to competing with the detail from the best DLSR yet made. Thats a pretty huge margin of victory for the 1020. He went on to note that the iPhone 5s and Lumia 1020 cameras trail DSLRs by a much wider margin in low light. He used a panel of 15 non-photographers to judge photo quality and found that the Lumia 1020 trails modern DSLRs by about 8 years in low light, which the iPhone trails by 10 years. Typo Products LLC, originally formed by TV personality Ryan Seacrest and entrepreneur Laurence Hallier, is the firm behind the iPhone accessory that BlackBerry has decided looks a little too much like the hardware keyboard found on its smartphones. Because of that, it’s now decided to take its complaint to the courts. Steve Zipperstein, BlackBerry’s General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer said that his company is flattered that someone wants to try and amalgamate its style of keyboard with other smartphones, but it would seem that it’s not flattered enough to not litigate. This is a blatant infringement against BlackBerry’s iconic keyboard, and we will vigorously protect our intellectual property against any company that attempts to copy our unique design. From the beginning, BlackBerry has always focused on offering an exceptional typing experience that combines a great design with ergonomic excellence. BlackBerry’s legal team goes on to say that it believes the Typo keyboard violates its intellectual property rights and that, as a result, it intends to protect those rights via suit filed in the Northern District of California. BlackBerry is widely known to be going through something that we can safely say is more than a sticky patch right now. The thought that it’s now going after a firm that makes an attachment for iPhones that brings a BlackBerry-like hardware keyboard to Apple’s phone won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s seen their financials. We somehow doubt that the company will be able to stay afloat thanks to whatever it can gain from a company the size of Typo Products, though. Still, every little helps. If you’ve been looking at picking up a Typo keyboard for your iPhone though, it might be worth doing so sooner rather than later, because once BlackBerry’s finished with them, there’s no saying with the company behind it will be able to sell going forward. 18. A published report out of China on Thursday, cites multiple Foxconn insiders as saying that Apple will release two new models again this year. But unlike last year when both the Apple iPhone 5s and Apple iPhone 5c sported 4 inch glass, this year one new iPhone will wear a 4.7 inch screen, while the other will be a phablet sized 5.7 inches. The insiders allegedly revealed the information at Foxconn's holiday party. Additionally, both models will offer an undisclosed form of biometrics. This could mean that both models could feature the Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button of the Apple iPhone 5s, or it could mean that Apple will be using an eye scanner. Apple last year released two versions of the iPhone last September, and considering the popularity of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phablet, the guys at Cupertino might just want to grab a piece of that action. Back in November, a similar report said that Apple was working on a 4.7 inch and a 5.5 inch version of its iconic smartphone. According to this story, the display curves downward at the edges, and Apple will embed the glass with sensors that can tell the difference between a light or heavy tap. Source

  23. BlackBerry may find itself facing a whole myriad of troubles in the consumer and business smartphone market, but it seems they still have one extremely loyal and extremely influential user. U.S. President Barack Obama became extremely well-known for relying heavily on his BlackBerry handset during his initial 2008 presidency campaign, and it seems his trusty smartphone has stayed by his side ever since. Now into his second term as U.S. President, Obama has claimed that he would love to switch to an iPhone to handle his mobile needs but is unable to do so due to legitimate security concerns. Obama was recently speaking at The White House Youth Summit, with the intention of promoting his Affordable Care Act which exists to increase the quality and affordability of health insurance in the United States of America. When conversation took a slight deviation and focused on mobile technology, Obama let it slip that he was unable to use Apple’s iPhone due to “security reasons”. The president himself, and most of his administration for that matter, are extremely keen users of Apple’s iPad, but the fruit company’s smartphone isn’t fit for the president – yet. The president’s reliance on the powerful security and encryption capabilities of BlackBerry devices shouldn’t really come as a surprise. The two-term president has already been through the process of arguing with his own National Security Agency (NSA) to be allowed to keep his BlackBerry after declaring that the government would have to “pry it out of my hands”. That was back in 2009 when he was initially elected into power, and although times have moved on in the smartphone world, the BlackBerry hardware stills fulfills the president’s needs while keeping his data safe thanks to beefed up security on the device. Although the iPhone isn’t yet ready to be adopted by famous political leaders, it has been going through a process of change where security is concerned. The integration of Touch ID and additional software based security measures shows that Apple is serious about protecting the sensitive data of its users. Source
