  4. Apple is gearing to bring the first major update to its iOS 7 software any day now. John Gruber from Apple-centric blog Daring Fireball has learned that the update will include an app which will stream performances from the iTunes Festival. The latter, dubbed SXSW, kicks off in six days on March 11 in Austin, Texas, and the app which Gruber has heard about will apparently work only on iOS 7.1. This mean the app has just six days to make it to the App Store and the update should arrive before it. The festival's kick off date also suggests that Apple will seed iOS 7.1 any day now and right on the rumor track. The first-ever iTunes Festival will host performances such as Coldplay, Soundgarden, Kendrick Lamar and others so the app might come in pretty handy. Source

  6. Besides the more colorful and flatter design and several features, iOS 7 introduced plenty of bugs to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Several bugs have been squashed over the course of software updates issued in the past few months, but the one recurring bug have been application crashes and random rebooting. After months of complaints, Apple has finally responded by saying that it is aware of the issue and that a fix is coming: "We have a fix in an upcoming software update for a bug that can occasionally cause a home screen crash." Apple has been testing an upcoming iOS 7.1 release with developers, and people using the beta operating system have noted that it feels much more stable and less prone to crashes than the public release of iOS 7. However, Apple has not confirmed if the crashes fix is labeled as the iOS 7.1 update or an earlier bug fix (perhaps iOS 7.0.5). Nonetheless, iOS 7.1 will also bring with it several enhancements, including a reversal in design for the Calendar application and icon changes in the phone app. Source

    Apple unveals iPad Air

The Apple iPad Air brings a new name, new design and more power. It received the new Apple A7 chipset along with the M7 motion co-processor. The other major upgrade is the design – it's based on the iPad mini and has narrower bezels (43% smaller) that make the tablet easier to handle. The tablet is 20% thinner and now measures just 7.5mm, thinner than the iPad 2. The weight also went down big time - from 653g to 469g. Other than that you get a 9.7" IPS LCD screen with 1536 x 2048 pixel as before. The iPad Air didn't get the TouchID sensor either, but we doubt anyone will miss it. Color options are Silver and white and Space gray and the storage options go all the way up to 128GB (starting at 16GB and doubling at each step). The iPad Air will be available on November 1 starting at $499. source

  12. New images of the next iPad mini and iPad 5 have leaked just days before the Apple October 22 event. The images show the iPad mini 2 next to the iPhone 5s and with another iPad lurking in the background. Notice how the home button isn’t TouchID but a vanilla one? Previous leaks suggested the iPad mini 2 will have TouchID, but this seems to put those speculations to rest. It’s all but certain that the big upcoming iPad will have TouchID, have the same narrow-bezel design as the current mini and be more compact than the iPad 4. We’ve seen both upcoming tablets in pictures and a video – perhaps Apple should at least try and regain the secrecy it was once a synonym of. Perhaps the omission of the TouchID home button was necessary in order to keep the price under control. Would a Retina display also be omitted from the list for the same reasons? Not long now, just four days until Apple’s event. source

  14. Apple has just issued media invitations for its October 22 media event where the company is expected to introduce its next-generation iPad and iPad mini models and offer a number of Mac-related announcements, reports AllThingsD. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and will begin at 10:00 AM Pacific Time. The invitation tagline reads "We still have a lot to cover." The October 22 date was first reported by AllThingsD earlier this month, and was quickly confirmed by the The Loop's ever-reliable Jim Dalrymple. The AllThingsD report claimed that event will focus on the iPad updates, but that OS X Mavericks and the redesigned Mac Pro will also be featured at the event. Apple is due to release a number of other product updates, perhaps most notably new MacBook Pros, but it is apparently still unclear whether those updates will be a part of next week's event. SOURCE

  20. Nowadays, saying ‘apple’ would bring associations with a tech company rather than a fruit, and things like iPod, iPhone and iPad are household names, but did you know that there is a hidden meaning behind the ‘i’, a meaning that was embedded in it when Apple launched its first iProduct? It all starts around 1997 when Steve Jobs made his return to Apple from NeXT Computers with a grand vision and with a company 6 months short of going bankrupt. Groups of Apple employees have formed, each one blaming others for the demise of the company, and Cupertino was practically all in shambles. Jobs spent the first few months cutting down on products and employees, and trying to regain focus. What remained were two product lines - the PowerPC and the Mac family, and it was time take a bet and put all chips on the table on one of these. It was the Mac family, with a plan for the first computer to ship with a new for the time Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector, and the first to shockingly skip the 3.5-inch floppy drive. This visionary approach to features will later become an Apple trademark. One more thing - Jobs had a radically different vision for its looks and design - it was not to be disassembled and upgradable (that was a stark difference from the vision of core Apple engineers like Wozniak), it was translucent and came in a fascinating array of vivid colors. It was like nothing else in the market, and right in its center was a CD-Rom drive. "We're betting the company on this computer," said Steve. "It needs a great name." As always, Jobs took the creative lead, thinking up names and he eventually came up with the name MacMan. Luckily, he was not the only one involved in the process. Ken Segall came to Apple directly from NeXT, with Steve Jobs, and he and his team were shocked when hearing the name. It must have taken a lot of convincing, but finally Steve agreed with his Apple co-workers to settle on a different name: iMac. "It's a full-powered Mac, so it can do a lot of things. But first and foremost, it will get you onto the Internet in 10 minutes, even if you've never used a computer before." And that’s where the ‘i’ in all succeeding Apple products comes from: ‘i’ for the Internet, the most important new feature of the iMac. The presentation board, however, liked the name for more than just that. The name was spot on - it was simple, it was obvious, it fit in the ‘Think Different’ Apple ideas. To them, it also stood for other things, things of different value like individual and imagination. These are the core Apple values built in the names of the current iPod, iPhone and iPad. We might also see an iWatch, and many other iDevices, but the values behind those products seem to remain a priority for Apple, don’t you think? Source
  21. iOS 7.1, the first major update since the seventh edition of Apple’s mobile firmware first landed in September, has already clocked up five betas, and although we haven’t really heard anything indicative of the eventual release date, it is widely assumed the that the GM and subsequent end-user roll-out isn’t too far off. Now, though, 9to5Mac has come through with something a bit more concrete, citing “reliable sources” in claiming that iOS 7.1 will drop next month. The tipster is also said to have noted that there are to be no hidden or secret new features forthcoming, and that what we’ve seen so far through the betas is pretty much what we’re going to be getting once the cycle is complete. We already know that iOS in the Car is going to be a big part of iOS 7.1, with app developer Steve Troughton-Smith having carried out some extensive research over the past few weeks and walked us through a few details. There seems to be a great deal of support from production car manufacturers for iOS in the Car , and although it remains to be seen whether the improvements to the likes of Apple Maps and Siri will pay dividends for the upcoming implementation, it will certainly be the flagship feature of iOS 7.1. The update will also include some rudimentary tweaks and alterations to the UI, although as per the betas hitherto, we’re going to be seeing a few minor-touch ups rather than any radical changes. As ever, there will be the usual spate of bug fixes and performance enhancements, making for a smoother and more secure overall experience. After all, it was only yesterday that details emerged of a flaw in iOS 7 allowing Find My iPhone to be switched off without a password, but since this appears to have been subsequently cleared up through the iOS 7.1 beta stream, it’s almost certain that said issue will be no more once the firmware is ready for prime time use. It’s always nice to hope for a little surprise feature or two, but unfortunately, this likely won’t be the case for iOS 7.1. Nevertheless, it looks to be a matter of weeks away now, and as soon as it’s made available, we’ll have the details right here; so stay tuned! Source
  22. The introduction of the Apple A7 chipset and the improved engineering principles mean that the device will ultimately be faster, lighter and thinner than all other iPads to date, but the Primate Labs Geekbench 3 tests give us a pre-release indication of just how capable the iPad Air is. The minimum we expect from any next-generation hardware release is a noticeable improvement in device performance. Apple’s introduction of the iPhone 5s and 5c paved the way for the A7 processor to make its way into the internals of the new 9.7-inch iPad. The Primate Labs team have put the iPad Air through the Geekbench 3 test which acts as a cross-platform processor benchmark indicator. The test works as a real-world indicator of performance and like many of tests of a similar nature, a higher score indicates a faster performance. Primate Labs have taken the extra step of charting the results of the iPad Air when compared against all previous iPad models (excluding the original 2010 launch model). All of the hardware tested have been done so using single-core and multi-core processes. Apple’s new iPad Air returned a score of 1465 in the single-core test which represents a 2x performance improvement over the fourth-generation iPad. It’s interesting to note that the second and third-generation iPads as well as the iPad mini fall way behind with scores in the mid 200s. The multi-core tests show similar results. The iPad Air notched up a score of 2643 with the fourth-generation iPad managing to pull in 1408. The tests obviously show that the new iPad Air offers a significant performance improvement over previously released devices. However, it also confirms that Apple marketing information that suggests the device will offer double the processing speed of the iPad 4. The tests also show that the A7 processor in the device is running at 1.4GHz, which is 100MHz faster than the same processor found in the recent iPhone 5s release. source : redmondpie
  23. According to performance monitoring by Crittercism, a mobile solutions firm, the freshly-released iOS 7.1 has a crash rate of only 1.6%. This is the best stability achievement in iOS's recent history, with versions from 6 to 7 having crashes of above 2%. For example, iOS 7.0.4 had an app crash rate of 2.1%, which means that either testing went over really well, or Apple has done an impressive work of optimizing the latest installment of iOS. Reportedly, a significant number of iOS 6 users who hesitated to upgrade to iOS 7 have now switched to version 7.1. Also notable is how quickly the update was adopted. Ad network and analysis agency Chitika claims that 12% of the devices that accessed its ads were running iOS 7.1 about 45 hours after its release. That's all fine and dandy, but Apple customers have been complaining of poor battery life, drops in connectivity, and random reboots since installing the update. Other users, meanwhile, have been enjoying their iDevices as usual. Either way, Apple has not yet commented on the situation. Source
  24. iH8sn0w, developer of popular jailbreak tools such as p0sixspwn and Sn0wbreeze, has just tweeted that he has discovered a new iBoot exploit, which should make the A5(X) devices jailbreakable for life. Apple’s A5 and A5X chips power the following iOS devices:iPhone 4SiPad 2, iPad 3, original iPad mini*iPod touch 5G*Apple TV 3*Apple has used a different version of A5 chip in Apple TV 3, iPod touch 5G, iPad mini and the 32nm revision of the iPad 2. It is not clear if the exploit exists in this version of the A5 as well. It will be interesting to see if this can help in creating a jailbreak for Apple TV 3, which has been elusive since its launch. Here’s the description of iBoot from iphonewiki: iBoot is Apple’s stage 2 bootloader for all of the devices. It runs what is known as Recovery Mode. It has an interactive interface which can be used over USB or serial. Update: I was wrong when I said iBoot was unpatchable, Alex has provided more details why these devices could be jailbreakable for life in the comments below (Thanks Alex!) iBoot is patchable with iOS updates. If patched phones not already modified with jailbreak software will lose the possibility of a jailbreak when they update. But the device is jailbroken it puts in place a type of safeguard preventing overwrite of the iBoot component thus remaining jailbroken. It requires all updates to be built with third party software to put in place safe guard preventing removal of old iBoot. Kind of like baseband protection in redsn0w software. iH8sn0w has clarified that it is not a bootrom exploit, but still a very powerful iBoot exploit. So looks like all my A5(X) devices are fully untethered and jailbroken for life now. :) — iH8sn0w (@iH8sn0w) February 1, 2014 @Pacman4484 @AmaznSpoderman actually. iBoot exploits are just as powerful as bootrom exploits (restores, dump blobs, jailbreak, untether). — iH8sn0w (@iH8sn0w) February 1, 2014 This is a very significant development as we’ve seen something like this since the limerain exploit discovered by GeoHot back in October 2010 that made devices like the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 etc. jailbreakable for life. It could potentially also help in finding iBoot exploits for newer devices. iH8sn0w seems to have used some kind of bruteforce mechanism to find the exploit. Not surprisingly, he plans to keep the details of the exploit private, so that it can be used for future jailbreaks. He plans to work on A6 chips next. Kudos to iH8sn0w for discovering the exploit. Do you have one of these devices? Let me know what you think of this development in the comments below. Source
  25. Even though there are many rumors detailing a 12.9-inch iPad model – often called the “iPad Pro” – not everybody believes in such a device from Apple including market research firm IHS, which told CNET that there is evidence the iPad maker is toying with the idea, but not enough to support an imminent launch. “Some manufacturers over the last six months have received sample quantities of a larger panel. They’re playing around with a product that could possibly be an iPad-related product,” IHS director of tablet and monitor research Rhoda Alexander said. “Various sizes are being reported with 12.85 inches being one of the sizes.” “We have not seen volume shipments yet of any panels,” the exec added. “We have to get a lot further down the line in terms of seeing really strong indicators from Apple that such a product exists, and we’re just not at that point.” Alexander further told the publication that the first rumors that suggested a 12.9-inch tablet would be made for education purposes were unfounded, and they show “a lack of understanding about how that market works. Those products have to qualify over years. Most of the education market is still using the iPad 2.” IHS is also unsure about whether the iPad Pro could turn into a hybrid table-laptop. “The usage model [for such a device] is not entirely clear at this point,” Alexander belives, saying that a full-fledged Office suite for iPad would help with the iPad Pro argument.
