    Apple unveals iPad Air

The Apple iPad Air brings a new name, new design and more power. It received the new Apple A7 chipset along with the M7 motion co-processor. The other major upgrade is the design – it's based on the iPad mini and has narrower bezels (43% smaller) that make the tablet easier to handle. The tablet is 20% thinner and now measures just 7.5mm, thinner than the iPad 2. The weight also went down big time - from 653g to 469g. Other than that you get a 9.7" IPS LCD screen with 1536 x 2048 pixel as before. The iPad Air didn't get the TouchID sensor either, but we doubt anyone will miss it. Color options are Silver and white and Space gray and the storage options go all the way up to 128GB (starting at 16GB and doubling at each step). The iPad Air will be available on November 1 starting at $499. source
  3. The introduction of the Apple A7 chipset and the improved engineering principles mean that the device will ultimately be faster, lighter and thinner than all other iPads to date, but the Primate Labs Geekbench 3 tests give us a pre-release indication of just how capable the iPad Air is. The minimum we expect from any next-generation hardware release is a noticeable improvement in device performance. Apple’s introduction of the iPhone 5s and 5c paved the way for the A7 processor to make its way into the internals of the new 9.7-inch iPad. The Primate Labs team have put the iPad Air through the Geekbench 3 test which acts as a cross-platform processor benchmark indicator. The test works as a real-world indicator of performance and like many of tests of a similar nature, a higher score indicates a faster performance. Primate Labs have taken the extra step of charting the results of the iPad Air when compared against all previous iPad models (excluding the original 2010 launch model). All of the hardware tested have been done so using single-core and multi-core processes. Apple’s new iPad Air returned a score of 1465 in the single-core test which represents a 2x performance improvement over the fourth-generation iPad. It’s interesting to note that the second and third-generation iPads as well as the iPad mini fall way behind with scores in the mid 200s. The multi-core tests show similar results. The iPad Air notched up a score of 2643 with the fourth-generation iPad managing to pull in 1408. The tests obviously show that the new iPad Air offers a significant performance improvement over previously released devices. However, it also confirms that Apple marketing information that suggests the device will offer double the processing speed of the iPad 4. The tests also show that the A7 processor in the device is running at 1.4GHz, which is 100MHz faster than the same processor found in the recent iPhone 5s release. source : redmondpie

  5. Emergency services attended a Vodafone store this week, after an iPad demonstration model caught fire. The store in Canberra, Australia, had to be evacuated, to protect staff and customers from the smoke caused by the blaze. As News.com.au reports, a Vodafone spokesperson said that "a burst of flames" erupted from the tablet's charging port, with observers also noting the appearance of sparks coming from the port. The company confirmed that there were no injuries among staff or customers. The cause of the incident - which the Australian news site rather dramatically refers to as an iPad 'explosion' - remains unclear. In its coverage, 9to5Mac identified the device as an iPad Air, the newest addition to Apple's tablet range. Sales of the iPad Air have apparently got off to a strong start, and Apple will be understandably keen to ensure that reports of this incident do not undermine its sales efforts for the new device. While an Apple investigation is reportedly under way, the company has not yet commented on the fire. Unfortunate events such as this one pop up from time to time. Some previous incidents involving Apple devices have been caused by third-party accessories of questionable quality and provenance, but other manufacturers have seen their products destroyed by unusual fires too. Earlier this year, a Samsung Galaxy S III spontaneously combusted while charging; two months later, a fire which apparently originated in a Galaxy S4 gutted an entire apartment. Orignal Article
  6. A bunch of photos of the upcoming second-generation iPad Air have leaked straight from factory floors in China. The photos are obtained by Dutch website OneMoreThing and show the iPad’s glass front, which now has the LCD layer integrated into the glass itself – currently, that’s not the iPad Air’s case where the two layers are distinct from one another. And here’s the front panel compared with a coin for measure. According to the report, it’s just 1.5mm thick, which could allow Apple to fit a larger battery. The iPad Air 2 is expected to hit store shelves in the third quarter of the year and sport the TouchID fingerprint sensor introduced with the iPhone 5s. In addition, rumors have it the next generation Apple slate would pack an 64-bit A8 processor and an 8MP rear camera. Source
  7. Ever since Apple announced the latest iteration of its mobile OS at WWDC last week, developers are busy perusing all the new features introduced with the iOS 8 beta build – and one that wasn’t. One clever developer, Steve Troughton-Smith, has discovered that Apple has included code that will enable you to run apps in split-screen mode – and has just demoed the partially-working feature on video. Since Apple didn’t speak of this feature at the iOS 8 unveil, it’s likely that split-screen multitasking has been reserved for an eventual updated iPad announcement. According to Troughton-Smith, split-screen will only work in landscape mode, and will only be compatible with the 9.7″ iPad Air or its successor. It will likely not make it to the iPad mini or iPhone, or at least initially. Source
