  2. Google explains how Android audio latency has improved, and where it needs to go Google today provided an update on the state of audio latency to encourage developers that “have been holding back on developing an Android app” in this category. This effort is the result of “Google working directly with OEMs to reduce audio latency” four years ago. It started in 2017 with Android 8.0 introducing the AAudio API and 8.1 later featuring “enhancements to reduce latency when used in conjunction with a HAL and driver that support MMAP.” Google says these actions, along with the open source Oboe wrapper that now has over 4 billion installs, “led to significant improvements in the device ecosystem.” One milestone was the Pixel 3a in 2019 becoming the first Android phone with 10ms latency. The average latency of the most popular Android phones has dropped to under 40ms, which is well within the range required for real-time applications. This current 39ms round-trip audio latency time is a notable drop from 109ms in January of 2017. More broadly, Google reports greater consistency in the last four years. In 2017, there was a 222ms difference between the highest and lowest values among the most popular phones. Today, the “range has reduced by a factor of 8 to just 28ms” for a “far more consistent audio experience.” This is more impressive when you consider that there are now multiple OEMs on the most-popular list, compared to only a single manufacturer in 2017. In addition, many of the devices on the list are not high-end flagship models. Another metric to look at, especially for real-time audio applications, is tap-to-tone latency, or the “time taken from tapping on the screen to hearing a sound.” To estimate tap-to-tone latency given round-trip latency, you can subtract the audio input latency (typically 5ms), and add the touch latency (typically 20ms). In other words, add 15ms to the round-trip latency. Given the numbers above, this means the average tap-to-tone latency of the most popular Android phones is also well under that required for most real-time audio applications. Moving forward, Google’s long-term goal is to reach 10ms round-trip latency, with 20ms currently required for professional Android audio apps. 3. iHeart Hails “Virtual Reality for the Ears” Company launches a big 3D audio effort for binaural podcasting iHeartRadio has launched a big 3D audio effort and announced a “strategic expansion into binaural podcasting.” It promises to put listeners “into the middle of an audio soundscape, immersing them in the story like never before.” It released this audio sample to promote it. “Put your headphones on,” it states. The company plans to introduce a slate of podcasts using this technique. “Binaural, or 3D audio, creates a sense of movement, location and triggers other senses,” the company wrote in its announcement, “enhancing listening experiences and providing a new way for people to hear high quality, surround sound, immersive content, and reproducing real-life experiences, much like virtual reality has done for video, right in their own homes.” The announcement was made by Conal Byrne, president of the iHeartPodcast Network. Byrne was quoted describing the technology as “virtual reality for the ears,” a more immersive way of listening. It said its binaural audio series “13 Days of Halloween,” produced with Blumhouse Television, drew 2.8 million listeners and that it will expand te franchise to other holidays. “The new iHeart 3D Audio slate will also include the upcoming podcast ‘The Mantawauk Caves,’ a co-production with Blumhouse Television, as well as a series of bonus 3D episodes across the year for hit shows like ‘The Ron Burgundy Podcast,’” it stated. A company spokeswoman wrote in the announcement, “The tech has been wildly underused in podcasting, and the move makes iHeart the first company to carve out a substantial stake in the space.” Source: iHeart Hails “Virtual Reality for the Ears”

    Boom 3D 1.0.3

Enhance your speakers and headset experience with this immersive 3D audio simulator for a true surround sound experience on your PC We live in a world where virtual worlds are becoming more and more realistic and alluring, yet most of us only think of visuals when they hear the word "3D". Of course, those of you that work in the field know that a truly immersive experience can only be achieved when all senses are fooled into thinking that everything they perceive surrounds them. The same goes for sound, and truly immersive 3D audio effects are hard to achieve without the help of third-party programs, such as Boom 3D. A tool designed for the standard user You can use immersive sound effects to enjoy your typical music listenings session, so a tool designed for such a simple task would have a simple UI and easy-to-use controls. This principle applies to Boom 3D just as well, since first opening the app will prompt a small tutorial on what all the buttons and dials do, although, with such a simple interface, this may be the shortest tutorial you've ever experienced. Surround yourself with high-quality sound effects Boom 3D uses a unique patent-pending 3D surround sound technology, that lets it pump more power and realism into the audio outputted, thereby presenting a cinema-quality sound on pretty much any headphone set, cheap or not. Like any typical soundboard, you have a few dials and nods you can turn to see just how your sound is affected, but you can also use the handcrafted equalizers and presets bring you the power to shape your sound at your fingertips. A simple way of listening to music in a whole new way While Boom 3D may not be a professional level, the fact that it delivers such good sound quality and realistic surround sound effects with such few dials, settings and knowledge requirements make it a must-have for the typical user looking for a boom in their sound quality. Compatible on Windows 10 only 30 Day-Trial: https://dl.devmate.com/com.globaldelight.Boom3Dwindows/Boom3DWindows.msi
  13. These are Sony’s first 360-degree audio speakers Your first look at the upcoming SRS-RA5000 and SRS-RA3000 speakers Sony’s SRS-RA5000 speaker. Image: Sony Earlier today, Sony announced that it would be releasing two new speakers compatible with 360 Reality Audio, its spatial audio technology that replicates the feel of live music by placing different sounds and vocals in a virtual sphere around you. It said its plan is to release them this spring, but it didn’t share what the speakers would look like. We didn’t have to wait to learn more about them, though, as Sony’s UK website now has full product pages for the upcoming SRS-RA5000 and SRS-RA3000 speakers. The higher-end SRS-RA5000, pictured at the top of this post, will have three up-firing speakers, three side speakers, and a woofer. It’s also certified for High-Resolution Audio. The SRS-RA3000, pictured below, has two tweeters, two passive radiators, and a full-range driver. Sony’s SRS-RA3000 speaker. Image: Sony Both speakers can calibrate themselves to the room they’re in with an internal microphone and a “unique Sony algorithm,” too. With the SRS-RA5000, you have to press and hold a button on the speaker, while the SRS-RA3000 can calibrate itself automatically. The two speakers also have Sony’s Auto Volume feature, which adjusts the volume of each track automatically to play them at a consistent volume. And both speakers support Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant. The SRS-RA5000 will cost approximately £500 / €599, while the SRS-RA3000 is priced at about £280 / €359, according to the press release on Sony’s UK website. That also says both speakers will arrive in February 2021, which is a bit sooner than the previous “spring” date we had heard before, so perhaps there will be different release dates in different regions. Sony said it is expanding the 360 Reality Audio platform from audio to video earlier on Friday, and the company is working with major music labels and service providers to begin streaming video content with the codec later this year. Approximately 4,000 songs currently support the format, according to Sony. Source: These are Sony’s first 360-degree audio speakers
  14. Microsoft’s latest Patch Tuesday Update(KB4515384) for Windows 10 1903 breaks audio on some PCs It now appears that alongside Windows Search bug and broken Start Menu, the recently released Cumulative Update KB4515384 has another issue, but this time it’s related to audio. Cumulative Update KB4515384 for Windows 10 1903 has a bug that either completely breaks the audio or lower the sound while playing games, according to various Reddit posts. As reported by affected users, the audio issue arose right after installing the latest Cumulative Update. “….my volume was decreased by a mile after the update and since I couldn’t find a fix for it I rolled back to the older driver/update. Now hoping to finally find a solution instead of resorting to rolling back. After finally updating the latest Windows 10 update yesterday, the volume has decreased by a lot and it’s close to no sound. I’ve reinstalled and updated all the necessary sound/headset drivers, both manually and also in Device Manager. I’ve tested and tried uninstalling some audio drivers, and it’s still the same. The volume bar hasn’t changed, it remains at 40% which I’ve always used, but the volume has gone very low.” “The volume works fine on browsers and also YouTube, but not applications and games,” a user wrote on Reddit. Another user corroborated similar story by saying, “….KB4515384 my in-game sound lost all bass notes. It didn’t affect video player, audio player or browser.” While Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the issue and provide a workaround, if you’re facing a similar issue, you can follow a few simple steps that can fix the audio issue. How to fix the audio issues in Windows 10 KB4515384 Update Right-click the Sound icon on taskbar and Sound settings. On Settings page’s Related Settings section, select Sound Control Panel. Right-click the Default device on the Playback tab and select Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and change the setting to 16 bit (DVD quality). Click on OK to apply changes. However, if you’re one of them who loves to listen to high-quality audio and, therefore, don’t want to lower the quality, not even by a few bits, you can simply uninstall the latest Cumulative Update. 15. Google makes it easier to silence your Chrome tabs By now, most browsers know that it's common for tabs to randomly start playing audio, which is especially annoying when the sound isn't coming from your active tab and you have lots of them open. Currently, the solution most browser vendors have come to is a mute button next to the title of each tab, but finding the tab to blame can still take up some time and focus. Because of that, Google is adding a new media hub to its Chrome browser. It's a new button that will be next to your profile picture, and it lets you see the media that's playing in the browser, regardless of what tab it is. It's more capable than a simple mute button, too, since it actually gives the user playback controls. You can pause the playback or skip to the next video or track on websites that support it, making it possible to make your way through a playlist without needing to leave your current tab. This feature isn't completely new - Google has included it in Chrome OS since August of last year. But starting today, Chrome users on Windows, macOS, and Linux can also manage their browser's audio more easily. Now, it just remains to be seen if other browsers will follow suit or stick with the current mute method. Source: Google makes it easier to silence your Chrome tabs (Neowin)
  16. Virtual Audio Cable v4.62 Virtual Audio Cable software allows you to transfer audio (wave) streams between applications and/or devices. It creates a set of virtual audio devices named "Virtual Cables", each of them consists of a pair of the waveform input/output endpoints. Any application can send (play back) audio stream to an output side of a cable, and any other application can receive (record) this stream from an input side. All transfers are made digitally, providing NO sound quality loss (a bitperfect streaming). VAC behavior is similar to "Stereo Mix" ("What You Hear", "What U Hear", ) feature of some hardware audio adapters (cards). But it is only similar, not equivalent. If you simply need a function like "Stereo Mix" under Vista/Win7/Win8/Win10, there could be better to try to enable it in your audio adapter. If more than one application are sending audio to Virtual Cable device, VAC mixes all streams together. If more than one application are receiving audio from Virtual Cable device, VAC distributes the same audio data among all targets. VAC is useful to record application's audio output in real time (audio player, instant messenger or software synthesizer), or transfer a sound stream to another application processing it. You can, for example, use two or more software audio players/generators/synthesizers/sequencers to produce audio streams, sending them to Virtual Cablet device and record a mixed stream from the same Virtual Cable device, using any recording software - Windows Sound Recorder, Audacity, Sound Forge, WaveLab, Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro), Gold Wave, Cakewalk/Sonar, Cubase/Nuendo etc. With an ASIO wrapper like ASIO4ALL, you can use VAC with ASIO supporting applications. If you use an audio encoder application that encodes a stream coming from a sound card, you can use VAC to supply such encoder with a stream produced by other application. You can use VAC to capture an output sound stream from the application that doesn't allow to write it into WAV/MP3 file directly. Unlike Total Recorder allowing you to simply save audio stream, VAC allows to route it in real time. VAC can be used with network audio/video broadcasting software like SAM Broadcaster. If you are using some Voice Over IP (VoIP) and/or Internet Telephony applications like Skype, you can use VAC to record your calls and conversations. VAC needs no hardware audio card; it is a "virtual audio card" itself. A detailed description is included into a free trial package. Since VAC 4 is an NT WDM driver, there are some benefits but some (generally older) applications that use MME (waveIn/waveOut) interface can work better with the older VAC 3 version. This version also supports Windows 98/ME. If you need to simply share your In/Out wave ports among several applications under Windows 2000 and earlier Windows versions, take a look to the Wave Clone software. Important notes Please note that VAC is not a self-sufficient software that may work alone just under operating system control. VAC is a tool. Like hardware tools (for example, a screwdriver or a saw) that are used only together with other objects (screws or boards), VAC should be used only together with audio applications to route audio streams produced or consumed by these applications. Features Local (console) session only (does not work via Remote Desktop or Terminal Services). Windows 5.x, 6.x and 10.x platforms (32-bit and 64-bit). Up to 256 virtual cable devices (some systems limit number of MME devices). 1..20 milliseconds per interrupt/event. 1..100 pin instances. Almost any of fixed point PCM audio formats (1000..384000 samples per second, 8..32 bits per sample, 1..8 channels). Floating point formats are not supported. Almost no sound latency with maximal interrupt/event frequency. RTAudio support with notification events, clock and position registers. Clock registers are bound to Virtual Cables so all streams in each cable are coherent. Unlimited number of Kernel Streaming clients connected to each port. Signal mixing (with saturation) between output port clients. PCM format conversion (sampling rate, bits per sample, number of channels). Volume control features (both attenuation and boost). Channel scattering/gathering mode. Watermark control technique to improve stream stability with unstable applications. Stream buffering technique to partially compensate bad application buffering algorithms. Control Panel application to configure cables and watch their state. Audio Repeater application that transfers from any recording to any playback device. System requirements Win 5.1..10.x (Windows XP/2003/Vista/Server 2008/Win7/8/8.1/10) platforms, 32-bit or 64-bit. Any hardware suitable for a host OS. A native hardware or a fully virtualized environment (VMware Server/Workstation, VirtualBox, VirtualPC etc.). With partial virtualization (VPS, Virtuozzo etc.), only host OS installation is possible (see VAC user manual for details). Hardware and OS must be suitable for real-time audio processing. You can check your system with LatencyMon and tune it using common guidelines. Version 4.62 (03.01.20) Fixed driver signature issues in Win7/8/8.1. Fixed minor bugs in Setup application. Version 4.61 (30.12.19) Fixed Audio Repeater bug that caused hangup on device disconnection. Added top speaker channel support. Added signal processing mode support. Replaced independent cable clock sources with a single kernel timer to allow multiple cables to be coherent. Fixed a bug in calculation of minimal cable event period (Cable Info window). Fixed a bug in WaveRT capture stream processing that caused data loss on short buffering time. Increased cable clock calculation precision, eliminating error accumulation. Increased clock register bitness up to 64 and precision up to QPC resolution. Added workaround for audio device properties confusion due to permanent property caching in Win10. Cumulative algorithm for actual sampling rate calculation. Added Sound Settings and Microphone Privacy buttons to the Control Panel. Added Microphone Privacy reminders to Audio Repeater and Control Panel. Changed signal level indicators from linear to logarithmic for better visibility. Added gauge coloring to Audio Repeater windows. Added automatic uninstaller launching feature to the setup application. Added default endpoint checking feature to the setup application. In the setup application, using more reliable device uninstallation algorithm. Clarified names of System Audio Engine and Audio Service. Added feature-limited free version. Removed three-cable limitation from trial version. Homepage: http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm Virtual Audio Cable v4.62 Site: https://www.solidfiles.com Sharecode: /v/WGwPQmeZmQm5g
