  1. Opinion 4K is amazing, but that doesn't mean all 4K TVs are By James Rivington 9 hrs ago No one likes 4K more than me and that is a fact. Like many people, I'm a total sucker for thrilling visuals and find native 4K pictures absolutely spellbinding. Sports, movies, TV shows - it all looks totally mesmeric and awesome. So it's with a great deal of enthusiasm that I arrange the reviews of as many 4K TVs for TechRadar as I can get my hands on. We write about 4K content too we're desperate for Netflix to get its 4K streaming out the door and can't wait for YouTube to up its Ultra HD game too. And where's that 4K Blu-ray standard at? Now, in the UK, 2013 4K TVs from headline brands like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Philips are currently weighing in at between £3000 and £6000 depending on which brand you choose, which compromises you make and whether you opt for 55 or 65-inch screens. The 2014 models will probably start flowing in at around the £2000 mark, which is a bit more like it. But that's still too much for the likes of me to splash out on a TV, and you're probably in the same boat. So it's absolutely fabulous news that Kogan has announced a sub-£600 (AUD$999, US$889) 55-inch 4K TV, right? Well yes it is. Sort of. It's fab to see 4K panels making their way down to more sensible and affordable price points. But before you set aside the cash and order one, consider this. 4K screens have four times as many pixels as a full HD TV which makes them super-beautiful and hella-sharp. But the problem remains the lack of content. 4K broadcasts are a way off yet, streaming services are talking 4K but not yet delivering. There are still no 4K Blu-rays. It's a problem. This lack of content really isn't a huge issue for high-end 4K TVs from the likes of Sony, because as Steve May said on TechRadar in October, their upscaling is positively Asgardian in its brilliance. How 4K TVs upscale from HD Rather than rely on linear scaling, top chips in high-end 4K TVs dynamically address local image databases in order to interpolate the extra data needed for the 3840 x 2160 picture. The Panasonic TX-L65WT600, for example, employs a database of 120,000 textures in order to guesstimate what extra details to add. It means that you reap the benefits of the increased resolution even without native 4K content, and when that content arrives, all the better. But this upscaling performance requires expertise, technical nous and R&D, not to mention huge investment. I've seen 4K TVs that don't upscale well and the pictures on them look so inferior to a full HD picture as to make their existence entirely senseless. Will a £500 55-inch 4K TV from budget-brand Kogan upscale HD well enough to make it worth buying in a world without 4K content when you could spend the same money on a top-notch 1080p screen from a trusted brand? Hmmm. Will any cheap-ass 4K TV upscale well enough to make it worth buying in this respect? And remember, you've still got other picture quality considerations such as motion, 3D crosstalk, smart features and contrast to think about. We'll certainly get one of these Kogan TVs in and let you know how it performs, but for the time being, scepticism is the right approach and you'd be wise to keep your cash tucked away before splashing out. http://www.techradar.com/news/television/hdtv/why-you-should-be-suspicious-of-super-cheap-4k-tvs-1214162

    They're just BOXES, dammit !

This posting is motivated by another I saw about the Firefox UI soon changing radically. I am sure to wander in a few different directions in my tirade here - but at it's heart that is what it is about. Seriously. I am really not kidding here. I know this may be hard to follow=> my apologies for that. OK, here I go now: My monitor is a box-shaped thing; TVs are also box-shaped; where I live the walls are box-shaped too. So - this square screen that I'm using right now is not very big, and from what I can tell squarish things fit best on a square screen, usually, right ?? (With me so far here ?!?) So here's another thing=> we have bodies that are usually NOT square (at least most of us ??), and most of nature also avoids squareness too...so we tend to REALLY LIKE rounded stuff - OK, I get that, no trouble here, it makes perfect sense. BUT: Until the day when my screen is either like 6 x 9 FEET square and is a thing that is like part of the wall, OR until it is big like that and also round=> I expect for stuff inside programs to be kind of SQUARISH and that's OK with me. It's just plain sensible & normal, I think. SO WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH FOLKS MAKING ALL THIS KRAPPY LOBOTOMIZED ROUNDED STUFF IN PROGRAMS LATELY ?!? BIG, rounded folder tabs, 'pearls' instead of menus, 'ribbons', and all sorts of other visual (non-verbal) stuff that just numbs the brain. OK, so I'm an old fart who really does PREFER the plain, boring, un-stimulating classic windows style. (It's squarish and that's as it should be.) So what will I do with the latest Firefox V 258.3456789 ?!? I will give it the 3 for 4 theme when that is possible - to make it plain and squarish, and install add-ons that add functionality while keeping it as boring as possible to look at. It's like this IMO: I don't want my browser to compete for my attention - it's just a thing used for showing other stuff. And=> It's the same IMO regarding the OS that I use; I want it to shaddup and leave me alone - to just put what I need on the screen and otherwise stay the hell out of my face and out of my way, OK ?!?!? All this fancy, cutesy, cartoony, brainless stuff just makes me want to puke. And finally - yes - I'll keep my ancient, plain browser until such time as it ceases to work at all anymore. Sure, I've got Firefox 20-whatever, but do I use it everyday ?? Hell no.
  4. South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. will soon take the veils off a television model that will run on the “webOS” operating system, highlighting its ambition of creating a prominent operating system for so-called smart TVs. LG bought webOS, a mobile-device operating system, from Hewlett-Packard Co. earlier this year. The operating system was originally developed by Palm Inc. to power smartphones that would compete with the likes of Apple Inc.’s iPhones. H-P acquired Palm in 2010 and used webOS to power a tablet and its smartphone models. But the system failed to gain traction with the developers who write apps for devices and the devices didn’t sell well. Despite H-P’s struggles with the operating system, LG had said in February, when announcing the deal, that it was drawn to webOS because of its technology and because the company wanted its own operating system. LG now plans to showcase an Internet-connected television model powered by webOS in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a person familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. He didn’t elaborate on the features of the operating system, but said it would retain the “cards” system, or a stack of pop-ups that allows users to navigate multiple applications, originally used in the webOS mobile devices launched by H-P. The person didn’t comment on the company’s plans to market the webOS-powered TVs but said the operating system may be developed and later adopted for LG’s other consumer electronics, including smartphones. LG, the world’s second-largest TV market after Samsung Electronics Co., has been busy churning out new premium TV models this year to spark interest in a segment that accounts for nearly 40% of its revenue. The company is also set to showcase a whopping 105-inch curved-screen television at CES, with a similar model expected from Samsung. While the market for operating systems for mobile devices is dominated by Google Inc.’s Android, there is no such leader for smart TVs. Samsung has long been working on a new operating system, together with Intel Corp., dubbed the Tizen that is expected to power smartphones and TVs. Tizen’s expected debut next year will likely intensify the competition between the two Korean conglomerates. Source
  5. Hackers could take control of Philips ‘smart TVs’ and broadcast their own ‘shows’ to watching famlies, thanks to a ‘fixed’ password which allows nearby attackers easy access to the set’s Wi-Fi adapter. A hacker within Wi-Fi range of any 2013 Philips Smart TV can replace the image on screen with video or images of his choosing (useful, for instance, for phishing attacks, by creating a bogus login screen), and can read files on USB devices attached to the set. Researchers ReVuln demonstrated the attack in a video, showing how private data such as browser cookies for sites used by the set’s owner could be remotely accessed. Ars Technica’s Dan Gooodin described the attack as leaving televisions “wide open” – and said that the attack occurred in seconds, without anything being visible to the user, even as the attacker plundered files from USB sticks and the TV’s browser. “Once someone has connected to the Miracast-enabled Wi-Fi network, they can use publicly available software to download any personal files that may be contained on USB drives plugged in to the Philips Smart TV. More troubling, connected devices can steal the highly sensitive browser cookies that many websites rely on to authenticate users when they access their private accounts.” The vulnerability (a video demonstration is shown here) cropped up in new firmware for Philips 2013 Smart TVs, which include a hard-coded password for the devices’ “Miracast” access point, which annot be changed by users. This means hackers within range have a ‘key’ to access affected sets. Independent security researchers ReVuln say, “The recent firmware released by Philips for their 2013 models of SmartTV (6/7/8/9xxx) have the WiFi Miracast feature enabled by default with a fixed password and no PIN or request of permission for new WiFi connections. The impact is that anyone in the range of the TV WiFi adapter can easily connect to it and abuse of all the nice features offered by these SmartTV models.” TP Vision, the vendor of Philips Smart TV range says, “We recognize the security issue as reported by ReVuln linked to Miracast on the high end 2013 Philips TVs. Our experts are looking into this and are working on a fix . In the meantime we recommend customers to switch off their Miracast function of the TV to avoid any vulnerability. ( Quick help: Press the HOME button – navigate to Set up – select Network Settings – Select Miracast – set to OFF).” The company is currently working on a more permanent fix for the issue – but sets from other manufacturers may also be vulnerable. The ‘screen mirroring’ function used to gain access is certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, and Miracast is merely Philips’ brand for a technology present in several brands of ‘smart’ TV. Source
  6. By Zach Epstein on Jan 20, 2014 at 12:20 PM It’s easy to forget how far the Internet has come considering how plugged in we all are today thanks to laptops, smartphones and other connected devices, but we found a fantastic video that will no doubt serve as an eye-opening and hilarious reminder. ”Imagine, if you will, sitting down to your morning coffee, turning on your home computer to see the day’s newspaper,” begins this report from KRON in San Francisco. “Well, it’s not as far-fetched as it may seem.” The report, filed by KRON’s Steve Newman back in 1981, details the birth of Internet news as it chronicles an experiment being conducted by the San Francisco Examiner where editors programmed a copy of each day’s paper into a computer and made it available via the Internet. To connect to the Web and access the S.F. Examiner’s paper, by the way, a reader had to place the receiver of his or her telephone on a dock and then manually dial into a service provider’s network. “This is only the first step in newspapers by computers,” Newman said in the report. ”Engineers now predict the day will come when we get all our newspapers and magazines by home computer, but that’s a few years off.” Psh, it’ll never happen. The video made the rounds five or so years ago, but a recent email from a reader refreshed our memory and it’s too good to not share. It’s an absolute gem and it’s embedded below. Do yourself a favor and watch it right now. 7. Earlier this week i gave you a rundown of 4K displays at CES that were actually affordable for many consumers. Dell has done all those displays one better by releasing a new 28-inch 4K monitor which costs $699. The new P2815Q monitor features a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and is a full $100 cheaper than the other low-cost 4K displays we’ve seen at CES this week. The new monitor will officially release on January 23rd so you won’t have to wait too much longer to get your hands on one. Source
