  1. 22 January 2014 Last updated at 01:31 GMT The economy has grown during Fernandez's government, but inflation has reached double figures Argentina has introduced new restrictions on online shopping as part of efforts to stop foreign currency reserves from falling any further. Anyone buying items through international websites will now need to sign a declaration and produce it at a customs office, where the packages have to be collected. The procedure will need to be repeated for every new purchase. Argentina's reserves of hard currencies dropped by 30% last year. The government of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has introduced a number of restrictions on transactions with foreign currency. Items imported through websites such as Amazon and eBay are no longer delivered by post to people's home address. They need to be collected at the customs office. In the past two years, the government has introduce restrictions on buying dollars Each individual is allowed to buy up to $25 (£15) a year from abroad tax free, but it has been hard for custom officials to keep accurate records of each consumer. Once the $25 level is reached, online consumers in Argentina need to pay a 50% tax for each item bought from international websites. Currency controls The government hopes that new declaration will make it easier for customs officials to enforce the import tax, says the BBC's Ignacio de los Reyes in Buenos Aires. New currency controls were introduced a week after Ms Fernandez was re-elected in 2001. Among the restrictions introduced more recently are a 35% tariff on any credit card transaction abroad. Despite the government's efforts, Argentina's reserves are now below $30bn (£18bn) - their lowest level since 2006. Currency controls, which were common in most countries until the mid-80s were dropped in Argentina in 1991. Finance minister Domingo Cavallo pegged the local currency, the peso, to the dollar. The plan collapsed 10 years later, when the government was forced to devalue its currency. The country eventually froze bank accounts and defaulted on its debts. It has since struggled to attract foreign loans at market rates. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-25836208
  2. President Obama is getting ready to announce some major changes to the NSA and the various spying programs we have learned so much about in recent months thanks to a series of leaks from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, but the damage has already been done. Couple that with the fact that major breaches perpetrated by malicious hackers around the world are on the rise once again, and there really is no better time than the present for those concerned with privacy and security to begin erasing their digital footprints. For those interested in doing so but who might need some guidance, a how-to guide of sorts that was put together recently could be a huge help. London-based domain host lookup service provider WhoIsHostingThis? recently published a graphic titled “How to Disappear Online” that aims to provide an easy-to-follow guide for people looking to erase their online lives. “Social media has made everyone’s life an open book (one that’s open a bit too far in some cases),” WhoIsHostingThis? wrote in a recent blog post that shared the infographic. “As more and more companies and individuals come to rely on the Internet as a primary source of information about others, so too does the possibility of compromising info reaching the wrong person grow.” The post continued, “For folks concerned about their personal information potentially costing them jobs and relationships, or for those dealing with the harsh realities of social media fallout, the decision to ‘pull the plug’ is an increasingly attractive one. And while it might seem impossible to keep your private life private and your Internet presence to a minimum in a 24/7 connected world, the truth is you can disappear online with a little effort and dedication.” The guide on the site’s infographic can be followed from start to finish by those looking to take extreme measures to protect their privacy, or bits and pieces can be used to eliminate certain online accounts that are no longer in use. After all, each point of a user’s online presence is another point of exposure. WhoIsHostingThis?’s infographic follows below. Source
  3. eBay is already a one-stop shop for many internet users out there, but the company is still working hard to enhance the shopping experience it provides. The online retailer has acquired startup company PhiSix, who specializes in creating virtual changing rooms. There, you’ll be able to try on all the clothes you like without leaving your computer. PhiSix’s work enables patterns and pictures of clothes to turn into 3D models. All you then need is to create your avatar and give it your basic measurements. eBay plans to go beyond its own domains and lend its enterprise service customers the tech for the virtual dressing rooms as well. Furthermore, the online giant is also looking int getting the virtual dressing rooms to brick-and-mortar stores. Check out an introductory video of how eBay plans to integrate the new service in its store. Source
  4. By Neurobonkers January 28, 2014, 11:09 PM Coursera is a service that allows top universities around the world to share their material online. Without spending a penny I've completed courses on Coursera from universities including Stanford and Caltech on topics ranging from science writing and law to neuroscience and clinical problem solving. My experience was overwhelmingly positive. As of today, the gift of free education is cut off from some of the countries that need it most, indeed countries so torn by turmoil that online education may be one of the few remaining life lines. These are countries where Coursera has the power to change otherwise hopeless lives, countries where attending a bricks and mortar university is in many cases not an option due to ongoing conflict. Below is an email sent earlier today from a lecturer on the course “Constitutional Struggles in the Muslim World” to students in Syria, Sudan, Iran and Cuba: Dear All, I write this email under protest and with a considerable degree of anger and sadness. Few things illustrate the bone-headedness, short-sightedness, and sheer chauvinism of the political structure of the United States better than the extent to which its ideologues are willing to go to score cheap domestic political points with narrow interests in the pursuit of a sanctions regime that has clearly run its course. You might remember the Apple ad from a few years back, in which the company proudly announced that their machines were now so powerful that they fell under export restrictions: “For the first time in history a personal computer has been classified as a weapon by the US government …” Well, that was a tongue in cheek quip at their Wintel competitors, but a few years after that same company decided that also an iPad apparently could now a weapon, in a rather cowardly anticipatory cow-tow to an ever expanding and aggressive sanctions regime, when they stopped selling any of their products to anyone who happened to SPEAK Persian in their stores (the company has since lifted that idiotic policy): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18545003 But you will now be interested to hear that also my course (and anything else Coursera offers) has been classified, if not a weapon that could be misused, then at least a “service” and as such must not fall into the hands of anybody happening to live in the countries that the United States government doesn’t like. I have thus been informed that my students in Cuba, Syria, Sudan and my homeland will no longer be able to access this course. I leave it to you to ponder whether this course is indeed a weapon and if so against what and what possible benefit the average American citizen could possibly derive from restricting access to it. Be this as it may, I invite those students affected to use services such as hola.org or VPN routers to circumvent these restrictions. Let me reiterate that I am appalled at this decision. Please note that no-one at Coursera likely had a choice in this matter! At any rate, rest assured that these are not the values of the University of Copenhagen, of its Faculty of Law, and most assuredly not mine! Let me end on a personal note: as a recipient of a McCloy Scholarship created to foster trans-Atlantic friendship and as someone who spent some of his most formative years in the United States, I have to admit that I am worried about the path this country is descending to. Blocking teaching (and medicine) from people whose government one doesn’t like is a fallback into the darkest hours of the last century. As my teacher at MIT, Prof. Stephen Van Evera would have told the people responsible for this: your mothers would not be proud of you today. Your instructor, Prof. Dr. Ebrahim Afsah Faculty of Law University of Copenhagen PS: Below an excerpt of the communication I received from Coursera; I know from previous engagements that there is absolutely nothing they can do in the current legal climate in the United States: “As some of you already know, certain U.S. export control regulations prohibit U.S. businesses, such as Coursera, from offering services to users in sanctioned countries (Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria). The interpretation of the export control regulations in the context of MOOCs has been ambiguous up until now, and we had been operating under one interpretation of the law. Last week, Coursera received definitive guidance indicating that access to the course experience is considered a service, and all services are highly restricted by export controls. In particular, the notion of “services” includes offering access to human grading of quizzes and assessments, peer-graded homework, and discussion forums. Regrettably, Coursera must therefore cease offering MOOC access to users in certain sanctioned countries in order to ensure compliance with these U.S. laws and to avoid serious legal ramifications.” PPS: I don’t think it is very constructive to voice your opposition to Coursera, as they can’t do anything about it anyway. If you feel you must voice your discontent, direct it at the political representatives who are responsible for this situation, i.e. your congressman or -woman if you are a US citizen or the local US representation if you are not. http://bigthink.com/neurobonkers/us-government-shuts-down-access-to-online-courses-from-syria-sudan-iran-and-cuba Also See Coursera's Post: http://blog.coursera.org/post/74891215298/update-on-course-accessibility-for-students-in-cuba
  5. By Kara Swisher January 28, 2014, 2:00 PM PST Here’s the only chart that matters from Yahoo’s fourth-quarter slides — the one showing a 53 percent increase in revenue and a 58 percent rise in gross profit at China’s Alibaba Group. Yahoo’s core business: Not so much, with continued revenue declines in a fast-growing industry. But — thanks be to Jerry Yang — Yahoo still owns 24 percent of Alibaba, which is set to go public later this year. Here are the rest of the Yahoo charts and press releases and such to peruse, most of which paint a picture of a shrinking business: http://recode.net/2014/01/28/heres-the-only-chart-that-matters-at-yahoo-in-q4-alibabas-doing-great
  6. Wednesday, January 15, 2014 Today, marks the first day in class for Georgia Tech's new online Master’s degree in Computer Science program, which Georgia Tech, Udacity, and AT&T have jointly developed. This is a very big day for us. Udacity's mission is to democratize higher education. With this program, we are making a top-notch computer science education available to a much broader group of students. And we are doing this at a price point of less than 20% of an on-campus education. I believe this is a watershed moment for students around the world. We are very pleased with the application numbers for this new program. A total of 2,360 students applied within the 3-week application period. This is about 75% more than normally apply for the on-campus degree over the duration of an entire year. Of this pool, 375 have been accepted and start today and several others have deferred admission. Most striking were the demographic differences. Whereas the average age of the on-campus student is 24, it is 35 for this new program. This matches our experience at Udacity, in that many of our students are young working adults who seek to advance their careers in tech. Also, 88% of the applicants are US-based as compared to 10% for the on-campus degree. And the yield (students who accepted their admission) was more than 95%. This is unheard of for any top-notch computer science master's program. The five courses launched in this first round are Advanced Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Machine Learning, Software Development Process, and AI for Robotics, created with Georgia Tech professors. They build on our goal of partnering with academia and industry to create courses to fill the job skills gap. While today, these courses are only available to students admitted into the program, we will open up the same courses for everyone in the world on the Udacity platform this Spring. Udacity offers a range of additional courses built with leading tech companies, such as Cloudera, Salesforce and Google. All of these classes are bleeding edge, often way beyond the materials taught by universities. By making them available for everyone in the world, we are steadily changing the law of limited access to a world-class technical education. We are excited to start this visionary new program today, which underscores our commitment and dedication to set up our students for successful careers in tech. http://blog.udacity.com/2014/01/sebastian-thrun-worlds-first-massive.html?m=1
